“Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.” (Daniel 9:24)

Daniel,
“Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city,
Yes, it is fulfilled, but there are some very good but different calculations given by a number of great commentators. I believe Tertullian did well interpreting the seventy weeks. I will only point out the highlights.
  1. This calculation begins with the first year of Darius, since that was the time when the vision itself was revealed to Daniel, to the day when Christ was born, and the total figure of four hundred and thirty-seven years and five months. This means that sixty-two and a half weeks were used up, or the equivalent of four hundred and thirty-seven years and six months.
  2. Then eternal righteousness was revealed, and the Saint of saints was anointed, namely Christ, and the vision and prophecy were sealed, and those sins were remitted which are allowed through faith in Christ’s name to all who believe in Him.
  3. the seven and a half weeks, which in turn are divided up into a subsection of earlier weeks
Well, after Augustus, who lived on after Christ’s birth, fifteen years elapsed.

He was succeeded by Tiberius Caesar, and he held sway for twenty-two years, seven months and twenty-eight days.

In the fifteenth year of his reign Christ suffered, being about thirty-three when He suffered.

Then there was Gaius Caesar, also named Caligula, who reigned for three years, eight months and thirteen days.

Nero reigned for nine years, nine months and thirteen days. Galba ruled for seven months and twenty-eight days;

Otho for three months and five days; and Vitellius for eight months and twenty-eight days.

Vespasian vanquished the Jews in the first year of his reign, bringing the number of years to a total of fifty-two, plus six months. For he ruled for eleven years, and so by the date of his storming Jerusalem, the Jews had completed the seventy weeks foretold by Daniel.

Interesting… I tried to do the calculations when I first read this, but I have since wondered…

“What if seventy weeks is just a symbolic numbering system?”

👍 That’s more or less it - the seventy weeks are a re-interpretation of Jeremiah’s “seventy years” (i.e. the length of an average lifetime - cf. Psalm 90) of the Exile.

In Hebrews 9:26 we read* if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice*.

This is an obvious reflection of Daniel’s phrase “Then transgression will stop and sin will end, guilt will be expiated.”

Then in Hebrews 9:28 we read so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.

It is clear this happened in Christ’s first coming because when He comes the second time it will not be to deal with sin.

Luke 4:16-21 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord." Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

Jesus declaired Himself to be the Anointed One of the Old Testament (Isaiah 61:1-2), the anointed of Daniel’s vision (Daniel 9:25-26). All six benefits of the seventy weeks have been bestowed by Christ already. If not through the Passion, when can we realistically ever hope for these benefits?

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

what was my question again?
If your question is directed at me, your question was “Has Daniel 9:24 been fulfilled?”

The answer is yes. I apologize if my answer is cryptic. The New Testament Scripture I quoted all refer to the fulfillment of Daniel 9:24

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

The reign of the Antichrist will last for 7 years, as described in Daniel 8:14 and Revelation 13:5: The “Abomination” will last for 3½ years, and the “Great Tribulation” for another 3½ years, or 42 months, or 1,260 days (Rev.13:5, 11:2-3, 12:5, Dan.12:11-12). See Duration of the Reign of the Antichrist

John tells us that the Antichrist is already with us (1Jn.4:3), and Paul says that the Antichrist is already at work (1Thes.2:6-8).

The Jews already have this Abomination: They have no sacrifice, no altar, no priests, no temple…. as it was prophesied it will happen after the coming of the Messiah! (Daniel 8:11-17, 9:26-27, 11:31-32, 12:11).

For some separated brethren, this “Abomination” means very little, because they already have no “perpetual sacrifice”, no “sanctuary”, no “altar”, and no "priests…
