I was amazed and pleased with Medium’s treatment of the priesthood in their script for Monday’s premier episode. The basic premise was that a priest knew who the bad guy was through confession, and the channeling mom shook his hand and thought he had something to do with it. In the script, mention was made of the respect that people have for the Catholic priesthood and that it still has a lot of meaning. And not one mention of the recent sexual abuse scandals. The portrayal of the priest was done with dignity.👍

I didn’t see this show so I’ll take your word for it. Sounds like a maybe a trend, back to the old days when a Priest was portrayed with respect! Well trend might be a stretch, but one can dream!!
sigh

I didn’t catch this episode, but my husband did and he was impressed with the way they portrayed the priest. It actually led into a nice discussion of reconciliation for us (he’s not Catholic).

I haven’t seen it yet but will definitely make a point to watch the show. It’s refreshing to hear that they are portraying priests in a dignified manner again. After all, there are many many holy and pious Catholics priests in the Church. Let’s pray that the past doesn’t repeat itself.

That is impressive! It was a fairly good treatment of reconciliation: e.g. “The penitent speaks directly to God through me”, “I can’t offer you absolution if you’re not Catholic, but we can still talk…”

Another good point that they made was the issue of faith in God vs faith in man. The Priest knew he wouldn’t have to reveal the name of the perp, because God would be with the victim, even if she died. That’s a strong (and hard) message of faith.

The main character, Allison, was suspicious of the priest, and she even made a snide comment about the priesthood. It was something like, “Oh don’t get me started on priests”. I don’t recall the specific words but it revealed her prejudices. It was really neat, then, when both her husband and her boss took the other side. Her husband said, “This guy has made tremendous sacrifices because he believes in something. You have to respect that.” Her boss was much more forceful reacting to her baseless suspicions: “The man is a Catholic priest!” he said, “And that still means something to me!”

That was good, but I was still waiting to see how the show would wrap it up. Would she be right after all? In this show, she usually is. I was relieved at the conclusion when the priest was shown to have been right in his actions and in his faith that God would protect. Allison, despite having misunderstood so many things throughout the episode, still wound up being the agent of God’s plan.

Good episode.

I am a fan of the show and I saw the episode. When it started, I thought the Priest was going to be the perpetrator. My fury was developing and then I started noticing how sincerely the Priest was witnessing his trust in God. The show went beyond just portraying the Priest as most of us know our Priest would be but it went further. It let him evangelize to the churched and his flock. And most important, the message was delivered in such away that it was acceptable and he wasn’t “pushing his views on someone else”

I saw the episode. This was my first time watching Medium. Though they did portray the priest in a much better light then I expected, I still thought they could have improved a bit.

When Allison tells the Priest she can’t confess, He says something like, “Why, haven’t you taken communion yet?” This implied receiving the Eucharist was a prerequisite for confession. It seems the show did not have a knowledgeable Catholic to consult on the basics.

I am glad that, overall, the show treated our religion with respect. Have you guys sent in your emails or faxes to Barbara Walters yet regarding her reading of the Catechism on the View?

Go the the Catholic League website for information on how to send an email to Ms. Walters.
