I have a Baptist coworker who is searching for Truth and appears to be open to Catholicism. She asked what Bible she should read. She doesnt have a great deal of lnowledge regarding her own faith tradition nor scripture. She is a very smart gal, but I dont know if it is wise to encourage blind scripture reading as it may lead to more confusion. What are your thoughts?

Talk to a priest and attend inquiry classes. Good place to start and btw, there’s only one Bible. We catholics cannot help that protestants removed several books from that bible and then put together their own. We’re cheering for her.
 
I would suggest going to a Mass to just listen. Listen to every word. Don’t worry about any responses, or other participations. The Mass is full of scripture and applied perfectly to worship and prayer when we come together.

I have an RSV Catholic Edition bible. Its good. I also have a compact ESV that is very well made, with a concordance.

I have found that getting someone to read a children’s bible is a good way to start. It won’t take long and the can learn about the basic timeline of salvation history.

The suggestion to take them to Mass with some conversation afterwards is a good idea.

The book “Catholicism for Dummies” is excellent!

As someone who has been in a similar situation as your friend, I have found two sources to be of great help:

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible - RSV- Second Catholic Edition
This edition contains commentary and notes by Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch (Note: This is the New Testament Only)

Catechism of The Catholic Church - This of course, may seem obvious, but just sitting down and reading the CCC has been my personal favorite past-time for the last 2 years and has answered all of my questions and corrected many years of false “understanding” of what the Catholic Church believes and teaches.

If your friend just wants a Bible that contains the deuterocanonical books then it simply comes down to preference for translation. Perhaps she could thumb through various translations at the local Catholic Bookstore?

Invite her to a Catholic bible study group, or you can take her to a Catholic bookstore and let her look over the different translations and find one she is comfortable with reading.
