Way back when I was 8, a priest visited my class and gave us all scapulars. All I remember is a prayer over us, the name St. Simon Stock, and learning that I was “enrolled” in it. I recall it being a big deal and I think that we were enrolled for life. I’ve read about the scapular, but that’s all I can recall from my own memory. I think it was brown and of an odd material.

I no longer have it. I think I can p(name removed by moderator)oint the 2-year window I lost it or threw it out. I hope I didn’t do the later but wasn’t aware enough of sacramentals and blessed objects at that time.

My question is whether or not I’m still “enrolled” and can simply buy a new one. I think the promise from Mary was that we will be saved from Hell if we die while wearing it. Is that even a correct memory? Will a replacement still carry the same promise?

Once you have been enrolled that applies for life, and you can simply buy a new scapular. The same promises apply when you wear the new one.

There is good information on it in this article.

In your day it was probably still the custom to enroll whole classes of First Communicants and so forth. This practice led to a lot of people being enrolled but not really understanding what they were doing.

You can buy a new scapular. The enrollment or blessing will transfer to any replacements you buy without needing them re-blessed.

In addition to wearing the Scapular you’re expected to do some regular prayer activities in accordance with Carmelite devotions.

There is a promise that if you die with it on then you don’t suffer eternal Hell Fire. That sounds rather superstitious and has led to some people insisting it stay on in the shower or when they have surgery etc. I think if you are a faithful wearer and devoted to Our Lady she will aid you at the moment of death even if your Scapular was in the laundry right that minute instead of on you.

Meditationsfromcarmel.com has the official Scapular Catechesis from the Carmelites discussing what prayers you should be saying when you wear the Scapular, and a lot of other official info about the devotion.
