Have I commited a mortal sin?

I’m afraid I have commited a grave sin. I had recently read that it is good to offer up offerings to God like withholding things that you like to do. I had this in my mind, yet I deliberately chose not to when I wanted to use my tablet. I had sort of thought that it wasn’t necessary to withhold items, so that’s why I did it anyway. I had also thought that it might be sinful, but I wasn’t 100% sure. Please help me to discern if I commited a mortal sin. Thank you and God bless!

It sounds like you’re being a bit scrupulous.

To commit a mortal sin there must be grave matter involved. What is the grave matter here? You were under no obligation to perform the penance of not using your tablet.

Please, let this matter go, in your mind and in your heart. God will not hold it against you if you thought you might be able to perform a penance for him and you were unable to do so at this time. You can try again at another time. He loves you just for thinking about Him at all.

Thank you. I suppose I thought this was a mortal sin because it involved choosing not to do the penance. Thanks again!

St. Veronica Giuliani: "…He [Our Lord] showed me that, in order to commit a mortal sin, one must will it in full knowledge that it is a mortal sin, and He added: “Now you feared it was a sin; and if you had known it was a sin you would not have done it. As for the pains and regrets you have had for so many years, I permit them to make you expiate the faults you committed.” (p. 373, Vol. 1)

I think you are “experimenting” in relating to God. So, now might be a good time, right now, to directly address God, your Father, and tell Him about what you did and why. Something like, “My Father, I was reading about things beneficial to my friendship with you and my life as your creature, so I thought it would be good to hold back using my tablet as a small token of doing without the pleasure I find in using it. Then I wanted the pleasure of using it and did it, convincing myself it was not important to give up this pleasure. Even so, you are the one who truly satisfies.”

Thank you for this short prayer for me to say. This really helps! Thank you and God bless!

No. and if that’s the worse thing you ever do, please pray for me when you get to heaven.

That is not sinful.
