Have you ever had someone ask if you were saved?

If yes. What did you think. ? How to answer?

Yes.

I think they were asking a question.

I answer " I am in the process of being saved. It will continue my entire life.

The Church teaches in agreement with Scripture that Christians:

"have been saved" through faith and baptism:

Mark 16:16
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God— 9 not because of works, lest any man should boast.

Romans 6:3-4
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried[a] therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

they’re “being saved” through cooperation with grace:

1 Corinthians 1:18
Christ the Power and Wisdom of God
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 15:1-3
The Resurrection of Christ
15 Now I would remind you, brethren, in what terms I preached to you the gospel, which you received, in which you stand, 2 by which you are saved, if you hold it fast—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures,

2 Corinthians 6:1
6 Working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain.

and that they “shall be saved” if they persevere in the Faith:

Matthew 10:22
22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Romans 2:6-7
6 For he will render to every man according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;

Galatians 6:7-9
7 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.9 And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart.

Yes, and this is how I answer:

That I am a Christian Catholic - That Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior - all my hope is in Jesus but with fear and trembling I am working out my salvation.

Yes, when I was attending a Protestant church. The question came off as expressing the height of presumption and self-righteousness of the questioner, and was instrumental in my leaving that church and later Protestantism altogether. It sort of hurt and really made me think hard about the whole doctrine of salvation.

No, but I did have someone ask me if I was born again. I was asked this question by an evangelical that had knocked on my door.

The conversation did not go well.
He asked me if I was born again
And I said, yes I am born again. I was born again by the grace I received at the time of my baptism in the Catholic church.
He said, “youre Catholic, no you are not born again”
I said, “yes I was born again, through my baptism. I am a baptised Catholic”
He said, no you’re not
I said, yes I am
He said, no you’re not
I said, yes I am.

And the conversation just went in circles like that. The thing is he did not explain any of his beliefs to me as to what it is I am missing in his beliefs regarding my baptism. Other than to argue with me that no I am not born again through my baptism. I found his whole approach to be abrasive to me and aggravating.

I’ve normally heard it, phrased more or less, how if I’m sure that I’m going to heaven.

Yes that sounds about right.
The difference in theology.
And its application.

Yes iam… No your not… Ha ha

To some people. And the theology of ancient times.
Baptism. Was identified with the particular rabbi you identified with.

And didn’t come with all the extras!!

As saint Paul said in acts 19
What were you baptised in???

Oh the baptism of john… Repentance hmmm

I have this discussion with a relative fairly frequently. He is an evangelical Baptist and has told me I am going to hell for being a Catholic and that I too much of an idiot to argue with as I refuse to renounce my faith and listen to his way to Christ. He maintains being “saved” is a one time event and all the other nonsense that goes along with it.

When he told me I was going to hell for being Catholic, I asked him to prove it. I asked him how he can be certain of this when God is God and he is not. He even got his pastor in on this one. Neither one of them could supply a decent answer and cherry picked bible verses to try to support his claim. I do have to say the pastor was at least gracious enough to not condemn me to hell although he did warn me.

He also believes the end times are near and the “rapture” will be at anytime. I just refute his arguments against the Catholic Church with scripture and ECFs. I also pray for him.

You know, I can quote the Bible for hours on end too. It doesn’t mean I’ll prove anything, but I’m capable of it. And that’s what I don’t think a lot of these people understand, you can’t just throw scripture at someone.

I ask some parents of other denominations if their kids have been baptized because Christians have an easier time doing it.

yes, i have heard this question from wandering, lost protestants;

ask the questioner which one of the 10,000 splintered fragments of luther’s “reformation” is his/her frame of reference

maybe pastor billy bob or pastor bobby ray can answer the question

i’ll trust in the magesterium

Good point. Being able to quote the bible. All day long … Can be counter productive.

Its the application of scripture that can make a difference

Yes, especially the Mormons who ride bikes and visit residential areas. They are big into getting people ‘saved.’ When they visit, I let them in for a brief discussion, accept the materials they hand out, and thank them for the work they are doing. But I don’t argue or get into deep faith discussions. I let them know that Jesus is Lord and Savior. Also, sometimes Jehovah Witnesses come around and want to convince Catholics of the error of their ways. I also greet them in Peace, and thank them for the work they do. But I don’t have lengthy discussions.

All the time when I was Jewish (30 years), a guy stood on a main corner in my town. He was nice, he had a board that said you “Are you going to Heaven?” A few times I engaged him, once I just shouted back "I’m a Jew, I was “grandfathered in.” I used to enjoy talking to missionaries before becoming Catholic, now I don’t feel quite as amused by them.

I don’t see how anyone can be 100% sure either way but “I hope to be saved” is a good reply.

Funny that this question is usually posed by hyper-Arminians, e,g, fundie Baptists, who would, if they understood their own church’s theology, vehemently deny OSAS.
One would likely never be asked such a question in a Calvinist church.
