I think Tolstoy comes can only be understood from the pre suppositions he offers to choose from: which are: " The world is made for us" (humans). [Genesis et alt.]. or “We are made for the world” [ can be deducted from John 15:12-14]. everything else is but annotations as a famous rabbi once pronounced.
So the old unanswerable question. what is truth. All attempts in tis directions sooner or later appear simplistic. ( remember the various “proofs” for the existence of god during the scholastics. Today they are not nearly as impressive as once Tolstoy talked about quoted pre suppositions in his book “On what I believe” chapter 9
