Lost friends or strained a friendship b/c you defened your faith? if so I would like to hear your story.
Last week I posted a thread about a guy , he is Lutheran and “husband of by best friend” that was always cracking comments about priests being pedophiles.
I finally e-mailed him that I was offended by his comments and politely asked him to stop, included a few links that some CA memebers were kind e-nuff to find for me about how sexual abuse is actually just as high if not higher in protestant clergy.
Now I have not heard a word from either one of them. I’m sad that it had to end up this way, espically for my best friend as we have always been there for each other…but her husband’s comments were driving me nuts!

Kayla:

I think you did the right thing.

If you’re really friends, you will both get over it. Maybe they’re feeling some shame for offending you.

I’d carry on as usual with them.

I’ve created tension with friends when I was younger and more verbose about the faith. But friendship overcame the strain.

in XT.

So far I haven’t lost any friends because I have defended my faith. They know I go to church regularly and I carry my rosary EVERYWHERE. When someone says something I find offensive, I walk away…generally AFTER I tell them I know a nice hot place that they can go to.

P.S. I suppose it’s because I don’t always know "how " to defend my faith. And you are correct…pedophilia and other forms of abuse are not limited to the Catholic faith. I think it may be because of our numbers that we get the notoriety, albeit not so good.

Kayla, I think you did the right thing. It may well be that after a cooling off period things will be better between you and your friends. Give it time.

Actual quote from my father: “Last year was really tough on me. For a time, I thought your mother was cheating on me. On top of that, your sister got a divorce, your older brother was thrown in jail for selling drugs, you became Catholic, and your younger brother decided he was gay.”

He hasn’t been openly hostile to Catholicism, but I think my Dad’s words are crystal clear about how he views my conversion.

Wow! Did you ask him which of those choices seem the better option to him? 😉

I would’ve just talked to my friend and asked her to speak to her husband - to stop with the remarks. My husband’s family is all protestant and they occasionally make comments like that just to get to me - and - when I get enough or they go over the line, I just tell them - “That’s enough!”
Personally, I think an email to a friend with stats and such just seems a little impersonal and a little confrontational - but that’s just me! Just say it to his face next time - ask him nicely to stop.
You certainly did the right thing, though - I just would’ve done it differently.
I hope everything works out okay.
