Nobody’s questioning your priest adding that into the ceremony.🙂 Goodness knows as far as adding to the liturgy, there’s lots worse stuff: Dancing liturgical maidens in tight leotards, Native American sage burning to ward off evil spirits in the parish church, new age ceremonies that are supposed to make the non-Catholics feel comfortable, brides and grooms acting as Eucharistic Minister to each other and the priest. Why, in the southwestern US, there is the lasso and the coins, which is very pretty, but not exactly part of the rite.

It’s simply that Roman Catholic brides are not given in marriage, but make their own decision, and it’s not a part of the written order of service, and never has been. The actual rite calls for the bride to either process alone, or with her groom, or then with her parents (whatever she has in that way, mothers being just as good, if not better;), as fathers).

The reason it’s interesting is in regards to fathers getting asked for the hands of their daughters, also not necessary to a Catholic marriage.** It’s nice**, and a well-brought up young man will at least know what his intended’s parents prefer. But it isn’t necessary, and it isn’t a requirement.

My father is a “You marry her, don’t bring her back, ha-ha” kind of guy. My husband is a “So, if I say no, is that gonna stop you?” kind of guy.
