Okay, so it was just about 4 days ago after confession, and already I have committed another mortal sin. I really do not feel like specifying what exactly the sin was, but it is something I really do struggle with. I am a teenager, and I will be getting confirmed soon. I want to be productive in The Church, however how can I be a good adult in The Church if I struggle with various Mortal Sins like I do. There is only confession once a week, and I do not know when my parents will take me again. I was going to do once a month, but maybe I need to do once a week if this is the case. I know this is a problem I need to talk to the priest with, but I would like some advice on the matter. I feel really bad now, and I feel I have really wronged God already.

I don’t have any answers for you; I too, and many, many Catholics, have trouble with recurring sin, habitual sin, venial and mortal. I have went to Confession, and then within days, needed to go again! I feel horrible: “it’s been 3 days (1 day! whatever) since my last Confession.” Sometimes I think maybe we feel relieved, or confident, and that’s when we’re tempted the most…plus that’s when the devil might be the most determined, when you’re the ‘cleanest’.

I just want to reassure you that you aren’t alone. I used to be worried as a child when I saw my mom go to Confession, because if she, an adult, couldn’t stay away from sin, however could I? But we all sin, and will, until we die. You can still be a productive Catholic adult, don’t worry!

My only advice is as you say: talk to the priest the next time you have confession, and ask him what his advice is, for even as we are determined not to sin, sometimes we fail. Then we try again.

Thank you so much! I could not agree more! This is just what I needed to hear whether I liked it or not. However there is only one problem when it comes to confession, and that is that I do not know the next time I will be able to go, and now that I have committed this sin I do not want it to just sit there. I know my father might go next week, since he did not go with me this pass week, so I could use that as an excuse to go again. Just I find it very hard to be taken to when I want to go, because my family has so much “other stuff” to do.

Me too brother, me too (and I’m not a teenager!). I recently wrote about some reflections from St. Josemaria on the this topic, you can read it HERE - if interested. I’ll say an Ave and a Pater for you. Keep fighting. Christ will free you from your cycle of sin. God bless.

Thank you so much, and I would love that!

One of the quickest, surest ways of putting an end to Mortal Sin in one’s life is to reflect on the Consequences of Mortal Sin. We must not sugarcoat or rationalize. We must be honest with ourselves. Even one mortal sin is enough to send us to Hell. The Saints have written extensively on the reality of Hell as a real, physical place in which real, physical suffering will occur for Eternity. This thought alone should motivate us to stop mortally sinning. There are also temporal consequences to mortally sinning. For example, the sins of the flesh often result in horrible mental and physical diseases and suffering. Reminding ourselves of this fact should serve as a powerful deterrent.
