Is sexual denial healthy? Is there a link between mandated celibacy and sexual abuse? Why is celibacy required for the clergy? Who benefits from it and what is its effect on those who accept it?

Directed by Emmy Award-winning writer/director/producer Antony Thomas, this investigative film features candid interviews with current and former celibates of the Catholic, Buddhist and Hindu faiths, as well as historians, neurologists and psychologists, who provide new insights into why men and women may choose celibacy.

Premieres Monday, June 28th at 10pm ET/PT

makes it sound like a rather one-sided look at the issue. I suspect that it will comprise a lot of emotional stories about how destructive celibacy can be, with some ‘balance’ thrown in by saying it’s a tradition that goes way back for many cultures. Though they will give some time to neurologists and psychologists ‘to offer scientific perspectives’ I bet there’s little or no sociological data comparing the behavior of celibates with non-celibates.
I hope HBO proves me wrong, and that they offer a more balanced view. I look forward to seeing it.
 
If the documentary concludes that celibacy is a bad thing, then no doubt a new class of victims will be created, i.e. lonely, shy, shut-ins who aren’t getting enough of that “good stuff.” I guarantee it’ll only be a matter of time before a “victim’s rights” group advocates subsidizing prostitution in order to combat these people’s terrible affliction…

Then I guess Christ was unhealthy…

HBO is no place to look for a serious, objective piece on Catholic teaching and doctrine.
 
HBO is so one-sided and liberal that there is a better probability of their entire staff voting for Bush than the odds of giving the Church fair and balanced coverage.

honestly I didn’t know this – and I take some pride my ignorance. I have warched almost no television for a couple years and haven’t watched HBO for (practically) a decade. 😛 I guess I assume almost all t.v. is rather terrible but HBO is worse than most? I’ll have to rent the documentary if Netflix makes it available to me.

I probably would have said the the same thing if it had been done by ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS… etc. Practically every television network operates under the norm of sexual idolotry. HBO has the added benefit of not being hindered by broadcast decency regulations (such as they are).

The only channel likely to give you the straight scoop on the matter is EWTN, eh?
 
Did any of you watch the special? What are your thoughts? It seemed a little one-sided and painted an impossible picture for celebants around the world.
 
I had seen bits and pieces of this special. One sided isn’t the word. The jist of it was that you can not be celibate. There is a primal urge that can not be overcome by what they were saying. I find this hard to believe. IF God wanted us to be animals then He wouldn’t have graced us with intellect and free will. I guess this is another stab at the church and at God fearing holy clergy that had been faithfull to their calling. The devil is a sore loser. We should all pray for true faithfull clergy and religious.
