Hubby and I are going to be getting our “afairs in order” soon. We need to know what measures are considered extraordinary by the Church, that we can refuse. I know nutrition and hydration are considered ordinary and that a respirator is considered extraordinary. And under what conditions, if any, can we have DNR and Do Not Code orders included. We may not be able to use a Catholic lawyer so we need to know these things beforehand.

This is from the Priests for life website…www.priestsforlife.org…You can request a packet regarding living wills.

"
Living Wills
Many of our people are making living wills, and many others are confused. These documents are unnecessary and dangerous. Treatment decisions cannot be made when you don’t know the disease or the available options! Contact us for a packet of more information."

The link doesn’t work, probably because of the ellipses.

In the UK, advance directives are advance refusals it cannot be stipulated that a medically inappropriate treatment be provided. A recent case after going to appeal upheld the principle that artificial nutrition and hydration were medical treatments.
