For those not in the know… there’s a new DVD format being marketed for the High Definition era of televisions. Unfortunately a new rivalry has also sprung up between Toshiba that manufactures HD-DVD, and Sony, whom manufactures Blu-Ray discs recalling the days of the VHS versus Betamax cassette tape format war.

Despite Betamax being the technically superior format, VHS prevailed for a number of reasons, a main one being that the porn industry supported the VHS format which was cheaper to manufacture, and apparently from what I’ve heard, Sony did not want to be associated with porn. The prevailing sales of pornographic movies in the millions helped push the VHS cassette to victory.

Today, most of us use the standardized DVD format to watch films and use as storage for our home PCs. With the introduction of high definition televisions, a larger disc capacity with a better read time was needed to play high definition video content. There was supposed to be a single HD format, but unable to reach an agreement, two new formats are being marketed, and it’s yet to see which one will become the standard.

Once again Sony is pushing their technology called Blu-Ray, which is currently the technically superior format and backed by the majority of film studios, which is also available in their video game console, the Playstation 3 for as low as $500 US. Toshiba is behind the HD-DVD, which is available as an add-on peripheral drive for low as $200 that attaches to Microsoft’s gaming console, the X-box 360, which sells for as low as $300, which is again $500 in total value. I’ve quoted these prices as they’re currently the cheapest ways to get these players, otherwise stand-alone players can cost as much as $700-$1000, but with time prices should go down.

Earlier, it was expected that the porn industry would go with the superior format of Blu-Ray. but it has emerged that they are now going with HD-DVD, due to costs and again it seems Sony does not want porn on their format.

I just thought Catholics out there would want to know. Whatever the case, I’m backing Sony on this one and I hope they never allow it, despite that it will risk them a large amount of business.

Though, just to additionally inform you that Sony isn’t so clean… softcore porn has apparently been manufactured on Sony’s gaming handheld Playstation Portable UMD discs, but I believe this is limited and only in Japan.

I think you’re giving the porn industry too much credit here!

In the UK where the porn industry isn’t anywhere near the size of the US, (it’s so small it’s not even a cottage industry!) Besides, buying porn in disk format is a bit retro, like buying an LP or even CD. Most people download their filth straight to their hard-drives, they’re not going to the shops or waiting expectantly by the post box.

The majority have thrown their lot in for HD-DVD over Blue-Ray due to marketing reasons. First up, the name. HD-DVD fits in well with all the other associated products and how they’re marketed.

In the showrooms, TVs have “HD-Ready” on them. Sky Broadcasting (along with all the others) is also marketing it’s “HD” services so consumers are already into the mind-set of the former, Blue-Ray sounds like something from an aquarium and doesn’t register a flicker of recognition with the average people in the street who’re already well clued up on HD-everything.

HD is breaking out a dash to the finish line and Blue Ray has yet to hear the starting pistol.

The first use for any medium of communication or data storage has always been porn. It started with cave paintings and it’s not about to stop.

The fact that the porn industry is not backing Blu-Ray tells me this venture of Sony’s is doomed.

Hi, everyone,

I am a professional editor, and as a result I do a lot of DVD mastering. Reading up on and working with these formats, you quickly realize that Blu-Ray is the new Betamax. The great myth about the VHS/Beta battle is that Beta was the better format. Straight up Beta had better sound and VHS actually had better color recognition (don’t ask me why it worked that way). Now Beta-SP, DigiBeta, SVHS, etc. are all different stories. Regarding HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, too much evidence is cropping up proving that Blu-Ray is pretty much already buried in a prehistoric tar-pit. Besides, it’s all going to be solid state in ten years anyway, and optical media will go its merry way. I think that in this situation, its just the porn industry taking care of business. Besides, did we boycott Gutenberg or the Lumiere brothers?

We have a Playstation 3 and have watched Blu Ray movies on it so I guess I am backing BluRay & Sony. Plus, in my opinion, Sony helped themselves by already including it in the PS3 which is half the price of any BluRay or HD player anyway. And you can actually get a PS3 now too but most of the local stores where I am are still out of the xbox dvd add on. If you don’t already have an xbox 360 your still going to have to buy both it and the add on, plus not all xbox games are compatible with the 360, whereas the PS3 can play all PS1 & PS2 games on it. Plus with Disney’s joining w/ Sony, all Disney movies will be BluRay (which includes ANYTHING made by BuenaVista productions, too). So there’s my reasoning on why BluRay will come out on top.

On the note of the Porn Industry using either one, my dh was at one time addicted to buying porn and I discovered that most of those DVDs cost over $60 anyway so I can’t imagine what an HD-DVD of it would be since they are more expensive so maybe the price will stop people from buying it anyway! 🙂 Plus I agree that most people download it on their pcs anyway.

Just a side note to the whole debate on the HD vs BluRay…if you don’t have an HD ready/capable TV there is no sense in buying anything that plays in HD b/c it won’t look any different than a regular DVD/Game will. We thought we’d try just to see and there was a world of difference between the PS3 (Madden 07) on our HD tv and on our Regular TV.

Plus, can you buy an HD-DVD burner? I know you can get a BluRay one. If you can’t I think this will help BluRay too.

Of course now you have another option with Apple’s new iTV and the new iPod docks for TVs where you can download movies & TV shows on your iPod and play them on a TV. They may not be HD but cool none the less!

Just my :twocents:
