(CNN)The man who drew the ire of animal lovers after he was accused of causing the death of Pinky, a beloved Chilean flamingo at a Florida theme park, has died.
Joseph Anthony Corrao, 48, was struck by a pickup as he crossed a road in Orlando, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Corrao was taken to a hospital, where he died June 5. The truck driver has not been cited. Corrao was scheduled to go to trial in August on felony animal cruelty charges, according to court records.
In 2016, Corrao was visiting Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay with his family when he grabbed Pinky and threw her to the ground, nearly ripping one foot off, witnesses told police.
The 19-year-old flamenco-dancing bird received traumatic injuries and was euthanized

My first reaction unfortunately is to be glad this happened as I hate animal cruelty.

However, when I read a longer story on the man, it appears that he was under treatment for schizophrenia.

I am also wondering why in the name of all that is sane Busch Gardens, and other animal parks, don’t better protect their animals from the visitors who may be mentally ill like this man, or just violent sickos, or ignorant. Pinky and the other flamingos should have been behind a glass wall or something where visitors could watch them without physically touching or hurting them.

I will have to pray for this man’s soul now because it is very difficult for me to pray for such a person. Animal cruelty is the most difficult thing for me. Fortunately, Blessed Titus Brandsma said “one prayer is enough” and “you don’t have to pray for your enemies all day.”

Eternal rest grant under Joseph Corrao O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

It sounds like this man, whose past included military service, jail time, shooting his former neighbor’s dog, physically abusing somebody over age 65, before he finally got around to brutally killing an exploited and unprotected zoo animal, had a lot of demons in his life.

I have to remind myself that God loves these people as much as he loves you and me and the kindest saints.
