How do I develop a healthy fear of God and a hatred of sin. I seem to commit little sins without blinking an eye, I want to stop doing this. I do not want to offend God by sin.

Dave -

Check out this link. I started reading this link and realized I had to have the book, which thankfully was available at our Catholic store in town (I’m sure it’s elsewhere, including amazon)

I have read through it once and have started over.

Allow it to sink in - there is sooooo much in this book, I am amazed every day.

I’ll pray for you, if you’ll pray for me - since I am learning every day that purging oneself of even the slightest venial sin is taking me a very long time.

If you don’t already, try weekly confession. And if you don’t already, have a regular confessor… helps make you accountable on your journey.

This is very good advice. I’ve learned that there are certain sins I simply cannot commit in the knowledge that I will have to confess them to my priest! It’s funny, too. Even when I confess the small things I tend to break into tears. There’s something very real about confession. It truly is like going before the Father.

Another thing that’s helped me is going through the Commandments in the Catechism, because each one is broken down into all the possible categories. There are lots of sins we take for granted because we simply don’t understand how seriously God takes them, and it helps to get this information along with the “why’s and wherefore’s” so we know the exact reasoning behind each commandment.

Blessings to you on your journey of faith.

An excellent paperback called The Sinner’s Guide written by Venerable Louis of Granada (1504-1588) is a must for developing a healthy fear of God and sin. It is published by Tan books. I purchased mine at a catholic bookstore.

Praise to the Almighty God.

Dear Friend.
If you would like to have relationship with christ, simply pray this prayer and mean it in your heart.
Dear, lord jesus,I know I am a sinner.I blieve you died for my sins.
Right now,I turn from my sins and open th door of my heart and life.I confessyou as my personal Lord and Savior.Thank you for Saving me.
Amen.

There are different ways to fear God, just like children fear their parents. Some children fear the wrath a parent may impose upon them so they avoid certain things. Others avoid things because they don’t want to hurt their parents. They love them and respect them, and it is out of this love that they fear offending.

This is as simple as it gets. It’s ok to fear the wrath, but even better to be fearful of offending.

I have found that certain books are helpful in developing conscience. Try something like, “My Daily Bread”.

Frequent confession is also important - at least monthly. If you have no serious sin (mortal), then discuss the less serious sin (venial). This is where you develop a sense of virtue. Explain to the confessor that you desire to grow in holiness. He will give you advice.

Make sure you understand each of the mortal and venial types of sins.

More than anything, pray that the Lord reveals to you in your heart those things that are displeasing to him. If you should be troubled with a pattern of repeated offenses, or a habit, you must dig deeper to make some kind of structural change to remove it. Remember the saying that if your right arm makes you sin, cut it off. I am surprised after some really deep soul searching just how too much TV led to not only a less virtuous self, but even led to mortal sin. There are programs I no longer watch and I have found comfort in using those times to read spirtual books or watch EWTN.

Peace!

Dear Dave

Fear of the Lord is a Gift of the Holy Spirit. This gift develops in us the Christian nature to fear offending God by sin. This does not mean you should be afraid of God, it means to be afraid of offending Him.

Other Gifts of the Holy Spirit : Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge and Piety. (incl fear of the Lord)

Say a prayer to the Holy Spirit to help you grow in fear of the Lord.

God Bless you

Teresa
