Hi emeraldocean,

Something similar happen to me several years ago. I totally understand what you are going through and it hurts. I met a “good” Catholic guy in an online dating site. We clicked, we met several times, we had the most amazing dates ever. He told me he wanted to married, have kids, I was his soulmate, call me everyday, Skype, chat, pursued me like no man ever did. He was good Catholic man. All of sudden out of nowhere he decides to break up with “Is not you its me” and I never heard again from him. A week later he was again in the dating site. I felt horrible, but more because I know another girl would fall for him and break her heart.
The reality is that this kind of men run when things become real. They have commitment issues and we can’t fix it. They don’t have the capacity to carry a real committed relationship. After we broke up, I tried to find information and psychology behind this behavior and I found two books that are amazing. Men Who Can’t Love by Julia Sokol.
Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment By Amir Levine. This is about attachment theory and that there are 3 attachments and it goes saying which one you are and how we get attached to others.
Hang in there, I though I was going to die too, but it will eventually pass. If you read this books it will help you understand more. Now that I am out of the relationship completely, I see it was all fantasy and fairytale type. It was not real. Also, take things slowly, don’t rush into things. You are not too old, I am 29 and single so don’t worry. I’ll keep you in my prayers!
PM’d you.

Saint Seraphim of Viritsa’s Spiritual Testament
"This Was From Me"

Have you ever thought that everything that touches you touches Me as well? For that which touches you touches the apple of My eye.

You are dear in my eyes, precious, and I have loved you; therefore it is a particular pleasure for Me to educate you.

When temptations arise against you, and the enemy comes like a river, I want you to know—This was from Me.

Your weakness needs My strength, and your safety comes from giving Me the opportunity to fight for you. If you find yourself in difficult circumstances, among people who do not understand you, who do not take what you like into consideration, who alienate you—This was from Me.

I am God, Who arranges circumstances. It was no accident that you find yourself in the place where you are; this is the place I have appointed for you. Did you not ask that I teach you humility? Well, then, look: I have placed you in precisely that place, in that school, where this lesson is learned. Your surroundings and those who live with you are only fulfilling My will. If you find yourself in financial difficulty, if you find it hard to make ends meet—This was from Me.

For I have your material means at my disposal. I want you to call unto me, for you to be dependent upon Me. My reserves are inexhaustible. I want you to be confirmed in fidelity to Me and to My promises. May it not be said to you in your need: “You did not believe in the Lord your God.”

Are you in a night of suffering? Are you separated from your loved ones and those close to your heart? This was from Me.

I am the Man of suffering, Who has tasted affliction. I have allowed this so that you would turn to Me, so that in Me you would find eternal comfort. If you have been let down by your friend, to someone to whom you opened your heart—This was from Me.

I allowed this disappointment to touch you so that you would know that your best friend is the Lord. I want you to bring everything to Me and to speak to Me.

Has someone slandered you? Give this to me, and bring your soul closer to Me, your Refuge, to hide from the “contradiction of the nations.” I shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noonday. If your plans have been destroyed, if you are downtrodden in soul and tired—This was from Me.

You made plans, and brought them to Me, so that I would bless them. But I want you to leave Me in charge of the circumstances of your life, and then responsibility for everything will be Mine, for this is too difficult for you; by yourself you can not manage them, for you are only an instrument, and not the actor. If unanticipated problems of life have visited you, and if despondency has seized your heart, then know—This was from Me.

For I want your heart and your soul to be always aflame before My eyes; to conquer faint-heartedness of the soul in My name. If you do not hear from your dear ones and friends for a long time, and in your faint-heartedness fall into despondency and grumbling, know—This was from Me.

By this anguish in your spirit, I test the strength of your faith in the surety of My promise and the strength of your boldness in prayer for these dear ones of yours. Was it not you who entrusted them to the Protection of My All-Pure Mother? Was it not you who once entrusted their care to My providential love? If serious illness, either temporary or incurable, has visited you, and has confined to your bed, then know—This was from Me.

For I want you to know Me even more deeply in you bodily infirmities, so that you would not grumble over this trial sent to you, that you would not try to penetrate My plans through different means for the salvation of people’s souls, but that you would uncomplainingly and submissively bow you neck under My goodness towards you. If you have dreamed of performing some special deed for Me, and instead haven fallen onto a bed of sickness and weakness—This was from Me.

Then you would have been immersed in your activities, and I would not have been able to attract your thoughts to Me, for I want to teach you My deepest thoughts and lessons, so that you would be in My service. I want to teach you to recognize that you are nothing. Some of My best co-workers are those who have been cut off from vital activity, that they would learn to wield the weapon of unceasing prayer.

Have you unexpectedly been called to occupy a difficult and responsible position? Go, place it on Me. I entrust these difficulties to you so that the Lord God would bless you for this in all your deeds, on all your paths, in everything that will done by your hands. On this day I put into your hands a vessel of holy oil. Use it generously, My children! Every difficulty that arises, every word that insults you, every obstacle to your work that could elicit in you a feeling of annoyance, every revelation of your weakness and inability, shall be anointed with this oil.

Remember that every obstacle is a Divine instruction. Every sting will be dulled when you learn to see Me in everything that touches you. Therefore place the word I have declared to you today in your heart: This was from Me. For this is not an empty matter for you—this is your life.

Free will allows a person to explore the choice of saying “Yes” and advancing to the next level. Two people can be good and Holy and still not ‘fit’ together in the big puzzle of life. It is not God who gave and took away, but the opportunity for you both to experience free will.

Talking to this person will not give you clarity, closure, or peace. What you are hoping for is to manipulate this person to your ways. Instead of falling into this trap I would suggest going to adoration more. Pour your heart out to Jesus. Then read a Psalm, and Gossple reading to listen to God.

May peace be with your spirit.

You don’t need him to be happy or to find self worth. I know it hurts, but two months is not that long. You just need more time.

virtual hugs

I’m sorry about your breakup. They suck. They really do. I dated a girl for two and a half years, thinking I was going to marry her. I even got a ring and planned a day to propose. Her whole family knew and was so happy, and she eventually got wind of it too and was also thrilled. Then a bit later, no dice. Broke up and man, it was the worst time of my life. I didn’t want to do anything. I didn’t do well at work, drank like a fish, was so upset with God that my faith took a nose dive, all sorts of immature actions. I wasted an entire year of my life moping for this girl, who now I have no hard feelings against (we’re actually on pretty good terms).

I know it hurts, but don’t blame him for breaking up with you. It may be good that he did. Otherwise, maybe he would have entered into a union he hadn’t wanted. That’s the point of dating, to decide whether you want to get hitched to a particular person or not. I know he said things that led you on, and that isn’t very nice, but maybe he did genuinely feel like that at the time.

Honestly, I think he met this girl while you two were talking online. He didn’t want to tell you because maybe he thought nothing would come of it. Also, he probably didn’t want to hurt you even more by telling you that the reason he was leaving you was because he found someone he thinks is better for him. At least he broke up with you before starting to date her (so it seems and so I hope). This is all educated guessing by the way, I probably am completely wrong.

Take some time out of the dating game and have some fun on your own. Do stuff you’ve always wanted to do. You don’t need a boyfriend to be happy, and family isn’t the only thing to look forward to in your future. You have plenty of time to make tons of babies; you’re only 25. In terms of why God did this? First of all, I don’t really look at things like that, but even if you do, maybe God did this because he has someone else for you. Maybe he didn’t think you two were the best option for each other. Maybe God wanted your boy to be with this other girl. You never know, but that’s the fun in living. Surprises are a wonderful thing, and being human involves experiencing the emotions that come with such surprises. You only get a limited time to be human, so embrace it, and embrace the emotional roller coaster that it entails. It’s a beautiful thing. You’ll be more than fine. Chin up.

I went through this…falling in love in a long distance relationship. He broke up with me too and it took me nearly a year to get closure.

I made the mistake of visiting him 8 months later only to have him treat me like dirt and let me know he was interested in a girl that he had introduced me to earlier that night at a club.

I cried all the way home and then I was very angry at myself and life in general. He turned out to be a total jerk and in my mind I had built him up to be something he wasn’t. He never gave a cent about me and he led me on until he had enough of me.

He lost respect for me b/c I didn’t move on. He treated me like I was nothing when I visited him and then when I began to cry he told me that I was weak and naive to think that I loved him.

What a food I was.

Have some self-worth and move on. You deserve it. I went through it too and it’s not worth it.

He’s just not that into you…

That’s the harsh reality of it. He’s not what you think he is…believe me on this.

Had the same thing happen to me years ago the guy tried to say it was me but the truth was he was not able to commit he did the same to the girl after me. In her case she was with him two years he only wasted 6 months of my time. I took it as life lesson and let him go. I never wanted anyone who didn’t want me. If you really love him pray for him and let him go. The highest form of love is letting the other person go in some cases. Prayers:thumbsup:

There are times when all of us are heart broken and confused. A broken relationship, a loss of a job, a miscarriage, a car accident, an injury, an illness.

The one thing that you can count on is that God loves you and he can use what ever happens in your life to bring you closer to him. Sometimes we have to sit quietly and say Jesus, I trust in you. Jesus, may this pain I have today glorify you and help to bring sinners closer to you. Don’t waste this suffering. Remember often that Jesus was alone in the Garden while his disciples were asleep. He was betrayed by Judas with a kiss. The apostles, his closest friends, abandoned him. All the miracles and healings he did were forgotten when the crowd yelled, Crucify him!

Come close to Jesus and have compassion for what he offered for love of us. Know that this suffering will pass with some time. It’s your cross to carry for today.

If you haven’t done this, pray daily for your future husband, that he stay close to God, that he make good choices, that his angels keep watch over him. Call a blessing down on him every day. In the future, when you date again, look for a Godly man. Someone who puts God first in his life and treats women with respect. Someone who already goes to church and goes to confession. He’s trying to be plugged into the grace of God. The grace I wish for all of us!

May God keep you close to his heart today.

emeraldocean,

You dodged a bullet. It might not feel that way, but that’s the reality. You even said yourself that he’s too immature.

Cut off contact and move on. Holding onto hope with this guy will prevent you from embracing other opportunities that come along.

You’re only 25. You are very young and no where near missing the boat. You knew people would bring this up. Why did you know it? Because it’s true!

I hestitate to express things as bluntly as 1ke does at times, but she is right. Listed to her advice.

I was just thinking, you posted that you are Catholic. Have you looked into Natural Family Planning? It’s fertility awareness. I wish I had taken the class for NFP when I was a teen, it would have saved me a lot of headache since I could tell later when I ovulated and then knew when my period was going to happen. Married Catholic couples practice NFP to know when the wife can and can’t get pregnant. If you wish to get married, this is something you can look into and chart your cycles and understand how your body works. Too many young Catholic couples go right on the pill and never even give NFP a chance. You have the opportunity to look into it and to read the teachings of the church on marriage and family life.

I really appreciate everyone’s kind words. I wish I could move on. I feel like the only way I will be able to do that is by finding someone new, who is better than him. This is going to be very hard since he has raised the bar for me. I liked everything about him. He was a good Catholic, went to Adoration when he could, always went to Mass, but also had a great sense of humor and made me laugh all the time. We were perfectly compatible and there was so much chemistry. He had the best work ethic of anyone I’ve ever met - he just worked hard and honestly. Plus I found him attractive. And he did have feelings for me. I felt like I could tell him anything. He was always willing to work through things with me right until the end. Now it’s a complete 180.

During our relationship, a relative of his (not immediate family) said some things to him regarding the distance which I think were the seed for his doubts about our relationship. I think he is deluding himself and I feel like I have to at least try to combat this.

I think I need to either A) keep trying things until I’m out of ideas or B) discover something about him which would make me not want a relationship with him.

Sometimes things that should made perfect sense just don’t work.

How are you perfectly compatible if your feelings for him are so much greater than his feelings for you?

One thing that is universally true about men: if he wants to be with you, no one will persuade him otherwise.

It is natural to feel the way you do two months after the relationship ended, to feel that he was perfect, and that anyone else who comes after will not suffice. It is also not true that you will only get over him if someone else comes along that you like more. You don’t want to use another person to get over this guy. I heard somewhere that it takes 2-3x the length of the relationship to truly get over it.

It is natural to feel like he is one in a million. But try to reword that as he is one in millions! When the time is right, someone else will pop up on the landscape. You need to give yourself time, and avoid all contact with him. You will not get over him until you do that. Try not to dwell on him. Throw yourself into work and friends. Try to go six months without contacting him; it does get easier.

Caroline723 is right, you can’t be compatible if you care more about him than he does for you. I know it is hard but you have to move on and try to forget all the “good” memories. Let go and ask God for help. It is so hard but we have to trust that God has someone better! Like one poster said it’s only a small amount of your life and you didn’t end up marrying him. Peace be with you!

Will be praying for you.

Including this???
We did meet in person on two occasions, each time for about 5 days. We talked via skype for a few months leading up to that. We would talk every night.

I do think he is somewhat emotionally immature as his reason for the breakup was that he ‘didn’t feel the spark anymore’…I think he doesn’t understand what love is, that it takes effort and it’s about you caring about the other person and trying to make them happy rather than butterflies. Yes attraction is important but that was definitely there.
The fact is that no matter how compatible he may have been in other respects he is not a good potential spouse. If he is immature, does not understand love, doesn’t have what it takes to stick through a committed relationship when it gets tough and breaks up with you because he “just doesn’t feel enough sparks anymore”, you should be thanking your lucky stars he broke up with you now rather than after you guys got married and had a kid or two. He is absolutely not a perfect match for you as you want a good husband and he is clearly not good husband material.

Hi emeraldocean,

I know it is sometimes difficult to understand why something happened the way it did, and why the other person didn’t see it the way you did. I see that some people who commented to your post seem to be a little derisive of this relationship, and in turn your feelings, because it was mostly online. But I know that it can hurt just as much as any other relationship depending upon what it meant to you.

Life is a journey, and we are all on a quest tso find God, whether one is aware of it or not. The penultimate reality lies with God, and you will not know it until you are one with your Creator. Thus, you must never fault someone else because they don’t share your reality. Your perceptions of fairness, justice, love, God–all of it is relative, just as your ex’s reality is relative as well. So long as it is relative, it is NOT the truth. Don’t worry about what society’s version of right and wrong, or your girlfriend’s version of right and wrong. Ultimately, neither your nor your ex’s actions/beliefs regarding the situation are bad or good, just different. In order to understand this, you must put God before this heartache, and be humble enough to say, “God, who am I to be insulted/hurt by this situation when I don’t even know the truth. You, who is all knowing unlike me, forgave those who trespassed against you. I will not put myself above you”.Obstacles are in your life so that you may turn your attention to him, and find rest in him as He wishes. That is their sole purpose. He can take care of you more than any man can. He knows your heart, and he knows how to purify you. Don’t hold it against Him when He allows suffering in your life to purify you, because he will strengthen you to weather those storms without losing faith if you continue to trust in him to deliver you. Take this as an amazing opportunity to turn to your Father with all your might, an opportunity to overcome your worldly desires, because that is what it’s really about.

I think I need to either A) keep trying things until I’m out of ideas or B) discover something about him which would make me not want a relationship with him.
Don’t do this.

I’m sorry if I sound harsh, but you need to put him out of your mind - I know that’s not easy, but you will feel so much better for it. Your options aren’t realistic. You shouldn’t “keep trying” because he has made it clear that he does not want a relationship with you, and if you try to create something that isn’t there, you will be the one to get hurt again.

One day, you will be able to look back on this and wonder why you spent so much time on a man when there is someone out there who will love and treasure you forever.
:hug1:

Please listen to 1Ke. He/She is absolutely correct. I will add that the feelings you are having have nothing to do with love right now. Now that he is no longer available, he has become more attractive. What you are feeling is “attraction” on overdrive because as 1Ke said, you have built this up in your mind. It is not love. Love is sacrificial in nature. It is not a warm fuzzy feeling. It is not the “go week in the knees” feeling. If he returns to you, your addiction to him will cement and you will be in big trouble. Move on. He does not love you, and you do not love him. You are addicted to the feeling he gives you…and that is NOT love. Go find someone to love and be loved by.
