Many religions have a concept of heaven, hell and judgment. What happens to all the memories you have on Earth are they washed away? What about the people you loved? Will you never remember them? Then I think of all the people you may have loved that will spend an eternity away from you. Like what if you go to hell and they go to heaven or vice versa. How severe is God’s judgment? At times I honestly think death is it. I think religion just helps us die a good death or accept it better.

The 100% truth is this: No one knows, and no one will know…until they are dead.

It is the biggest unknown in the world, and thus biggest fear/hope simultaneously.

I don’t think so, because we will enter a totally different form of existence, a non-physical one.

Therefore without our brains we will not be able to recall anything of our past lives.

But our essence will remain.

If only the dead could tell us but death is permanent. Nothing in life lasts forever. Not love, not marriage, not beauty. This is really all you have then which makes life for the poor even sadder.

There are worse tragedies than being financially poor, if that is the only cross one bears. Of course, one could be financially poor and subjected to other griefs as well.

All the catholic near death experiences, and christian ones,

Also, all the lives of the saints,

And all the private revelations about Purgatory

All these say that you do retain your memories, who you are, and the friendships on earth, (as long as you or those others don’t end up in Hell).

St Padre Pio had an encounter with a soul from Purgatory who told Padre Pio his past.

Many many other saints had such encounters.

St John Bosco had an encounter with many friends of his returning to him during the day or in his dreams to tell him things. He said they were like they were on earth but glorified. Incredibly beautiful.

The Bible says: “Now we see dimly as if in a mirror. But one day we will see in truth.”

The Bible also mentions the veil of this world being pulled back, it’s like we are looking through a transparent curtain but one day will see things glorified in Heaven.

It is natural for the human beings to believe in the afterlife, where we have chance to finish and fulfill everything that we started here on earth. If death were “it”, all the heroic sacrifices various people made throughout history, the self-denying love for others and everything we create on Earth would have been in vain and pointless.

Yes, at least, when we reach the Beatific Vision, we will have all our memories and more than that. Information cannot be fully destroyed. And God is almighty.

We should not consider a “good death” our main purpose. We can pray about it, but it is ultimately for God to grant us new life after this our temporary existence. We cannot “earn” it or “achieve” it by any special practices.

Yes. I don’t know why people think we forget everything and everyone. Never have heard that advanced anywhere. That’s certainly not priests tell us a funeral Masses.

God’s judgement is not severe; it’s perfect. We have the free will to choose where we wish to spend eternity and God 100% gives us our choice. We pray for the dead and the dead pray for us; that makes me think that even though we loose the relationship by death, our deceased loved ones are still thinking about and looking out for us in this life. :heaven:

I wish life did not have tragedies. The news makes you feel unsafe. It is unfair people die of tragic, painful and untimely deaths. I HATE THAT. Life is not fair. I would love to believe the soul leaves the body quickly so the person feels no pain as they are dying. No one chooses to die an excruciatingly painful death. It is really sad actually. I should not think so negatively. God be with us all.

Death is **always **hideous. There’s no point in trying to poeticise it.

Finding God and His Love and the truth of Him will either come now or in heaven.

This is to say a great fear some or perhaps most have is the seperation of loved ones who may go to hell.

I can assure you when you are at peace with God hell is no fear in any circumstsnce. I used to think this same thing of my family, and temporaly to a point I would prefer them in heaven, but honestly if it is God’s will they are not I do not care.

I am even at the point where I do what I can and fear not hell for myself. I shall do what I can even if destined or in hell I will still strive to follow God’s will to what I can. Even if offered the chance by Satan to rise up and fight God and God tells me even if I don’t I will stay in hell, I will still not stand with the devil.

That is the thing you should seek, the true nature of God’s will and glory 🙂

So you think some people are destined to go to hell?

I don’t mean “destined” as in predestined or whatever. I meant it like if that is what is going to happen as natural cause and affect
It sucks. God is infinitely merciful. I hope for the best.

Well, I don’t think it’s cruel for God to damn people to hell.

Think about it this way, if you really like a girl. And you keep chasing after her.You keep helping her, trying to hang out with her etc. But she doesn’t want to be with you. If you really loved her, you would let her go.

God has been trying to be with us. He helped us, DIED for us, etc. His arms were always open for sinners. But if we choose to turn him away, he’ll let us go. Why make people who reject him spend an eternity with him?

Of course in cases like say, a hindu who doesn’t know much about Jesus won’t go to hell. God is merciful there, he knows us genuinely. His judgment won’t be unfair

So you think some people are destined to go to hell?
Just to answer points from several of your posts at the same time:
  • Nobody is predestined to go to Hell. That is an infallible Church teaching.
  • The soul leaves the body AFTER (and we don’t know exactly when after) a person dies and not while they are dying. That is an infallible teaching of the Church.
  • Nothing in our earthly life lasts forever but if we die in a state of grace we will live forever with Christ. That is an infallible teaching of the Church.
  • Death is not it!! Heaven, Purgatory and Hell are real and that is an infallible teaching of the Church. If we die in a state of grace we are saved (Purgatory first then Heaven or straight to Heaven) but if we die in a state of mortal sin then we go immediately to Hell forever.
