We don’t hear much about that anymore. I guess it isn’t a pastoral priority these days. I can completely identify with an old style cradle Catholic, George Carlin, when he remembered what he was taught in the 50’s:
“Heaven was a lot of white light and a lot of vertical lines and a lot of real tall angels, except for the cherubs, all the angels really tall dudes man. And all blond. There were far too many blonds in heaven as far as I was concerned.”
“Hell was like burning 100 Christmas trees and jumping tight in the middle”
"It’s not even a sin to eat meat on Friday anymore but I’ll betcha there are still some guys in Hell doing time on the meat rap right? I thought it was retroactive! I had a bologna sandwich. This guy had a beef jerky right? How would you like to do eternity for a beef jerky? Hell was no 5 to 10. Hell was LATER. "
“Purgatory was wierd. It was like it was as bad as Hell but you knew you were going home. I wondered if they had short time clubs in Purgatory. I’m short. Two eons man. I can do an eon standing on my head man.”
“The wierdest of all was Limbo … I think when the purged a few of the saints they called off Limbo too. I hope they promoted everybody and sent them to heaven and didn’t just cut them loose in space.”
Yeah, this is a comedian talking but this is the kind of stuff my mother told me too. She used to pause briefly after every one of her prayers to see if she could spot a soul flying up from Purgatory to Heaven. I’m not kidding. Back in those days, I had both a lot of jewels in my crown and a lot of black marks on my soul. I kinda wondered which collection would win out in the end. Oh! If anyone found out that I bit Jesus while kneeling at the communion rail?
Maybe this stuff is better left in the past.
