When did the first souls go to heaven? I understand that after the crucifiction Jesus decended to Sheol or Abrahams Bosom (Paradise) and spent time with the souls waiting to go to heaven. Did the first souls go to heaven then (during the 3 days), upon the Resurrection on Easter Morning, or on Ascension Thursday where Jesus was the first to enter heaven?

The gates of heaven were opened upon Jesus’ ascension, and that’s when the souls of the righteous dead were able to enter heaven.

I agree, but found this statement in the Catechism:

637 In his human soul united to his divine person, the dead Christ went down to the realm of the dead. He opened heaven’s gates for the just who had gone before him.

It was just pointed out to me that the Catechism from the Council of Trent says the following:

Finally, by His Ascension He has prepared for us a place, as He had promised, and has entered, as our head, in the name of us all, into the possession of the glory of heaven." Ascending into heaven, He threw open its gates, which had been closed by the sin of Adam; and, as He foretold to His disciples at His Last Supper, secured to us a way by which we may arrive at eternal happiness. In order to give an open proof of this by its fulfilment, He introduced with Himself into the mansions of eternal bliss the souls of the just whom He had liberated from hell.

Yes, it just makes sense to me that the souls of the dead would follow Our Lord into heaven when He ascended, not go there before Him.
