A OSAS Protestant used this to purport the idea that because this person can’t come to repentance again, it must mean that you can only be OSAS. How do we interpret this passage?
This passage is about Christians who have abandoned the Faith they once held dear, and returned to paganism. They are apostates, and this is what St. Paul is explaining.
St. Peter also wrote about those Christians who rejected the Faith they were baptized into and believed and practiced fully and instead returned to their previous paganistic ways, turning their back on the saving grace of the Holy Spirit and God,.
2 Peter 2:21 describes what an apostate is when it says, “For it had been better for them not to have know the way of righteousness, then, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.”
Your Protestant friend needs to read the Bible in context and he will see that there is indeed the possibility of losing ones’ Faith and savlation. That is what an apostate person is.
Heretics are Christians that have rejected parts of the Bible and the Church’s teachings but still hold onto some fundamental truths.
Apostates are people who were Christian, practiced faithfully, then have turned their backs on the Church and God fully - a complete rejection of Christianity.
And if he thinks it’s impossible, then he is foolish for this has happened, and even 1/3 of the angels in heaven turned their back on God and rejected Him. Thus the fallen angels. So, if the angels in heaven who saw God face-to-face, and experienced all the heavenly beauty and peace could turn their back on God, then it is not far-fetched to believe that people could do the same (sadly).
