In the sacred tent (also known as the Tabernacle), where the people would gather to worship God and offer sacrifices (Exod 25-30) there was an area which had a table, a golden candlestick, and an altar where incense was burned. The altar and table were made of acacia wood and covered with gold.
A special kind of bread called Sacred Bread, or the Bread of the Presence was kept on the table. Twelve loaves of bread, one for each of Israel’s tribes, were to be set out on the table every Sabbath (the day of rest), and only the priests were permitted to eat it (Lev 24.5–9).
