Hell Houses?

On a thread on Halloween a poster mentioned a Hell House. I was just curious if anyone outside of the south has heard of this bizarre, fundmentalist version of a haunted house.

It involves actors trying to scare kids into believing in Christ. A house is set up with each room or section having a miniplay. The little skits show people that are making decisions that will send them to hell. There is not a lot of love or compassion involved, just a lot of hate and fear tactics. Egads! I live in Dallas and have seen that attraction advertised on billboards. I would never have imagined it to contain a “Christian” message. Since we would never patronize any real haunted house type of event, we wouldn’t go to the H*** House anyway. But what a terrible way to get Christ’s message across. Although fear of eternal separation of God might be a good motivator, a better one is knowing the love of Christ and the power of the sacrifice he made for our souls. I’d be furious if I brought my family to any event that looks like one thing on the outside, but has a secret agenda that would be unknown until I was inside and had been exposed to that message.
 
I haven’t heard of that, but we had a “Haunted House” in Oregon that was actually run by occult members who tried to recruit kids :eek:

Be wary of haunted houses – know who’s running them and what’s inside before you let your kids go.
 
A couple years ago, The Door, a fundie group, opened one of these in the Phoenix area
Unsuspecting teens went to it and were completely freaked out, according to the *Arizona Republic, *newspaper.
Apparently, an abortion was emulated with a very real looking aborted baby.
If the theme is horror, that place qualified.
It was all about damnation.
Not that the idea isn’t correct, but there must be a less blatent way to get the message across.
Then again, maybe it scared some folks back to Christ.

How pathetically sad. Do these actors believe that the message of Jesus Christ is so weak and bankrupt that they have to bludgeon kids with negativity, hate, and fear to get it across?

Where is the love of Christ in all this?

OH yes, I live on the northeast coast and was invited to one last year, by a fundamentalist man on my husband’s flight crew. I haven’t been to one since I was a teenager. They are AWFUL!

Just for the fun of it try to catch the episode of King of the Hill when the son goes to a Hell house, its funny. There is also a documentary available to rent about Hell Houses. I think it’s just called Hell House.

I am in the south and a HELL HOUSE is in nearly every single church for Halloween all for fund raising purposes. The biggest one is not far from me. A Baptist church. I went to the Hell House about 15 years ago…scenes from a drunk driver wreck…then eventually you make your way into the basement of the church…They have on the heat, so it’s hot as you know where in the basement…

Yes, all to scare the HELL out of you.

I wouldn’t dare let small children goes to these! just my .02

I don’t know how sincere a conversion to Christ could be if it originates with fear.:confused: I think that the opposite will be the result. A teenager might feel a momentary twinge of guilt and fear, freak out, maybe accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior and then eventually rebel big time. The teenager’s view of religion will be one of hell, damnation and negativity.

Absolutely true. Fear is a very flimsy foundation for conversion, one that will crumble at the earliest opportunity.

And this is exactly what will turn them off to Christianity.

It’s too bad – it seems to me the “hell house” folks are wasting their acting skills that could be put to better use – how about some skits that show people turning to Christ for the right reasons?

I’ve been to one. There is a similar thing called Judgement House. No expense was spared. A huge 50 x20 foot tent, overturned trees and wrecked cars were part of the one I attended.

The ENTIRE sanctuary was covered in white cloth for the judgement section. (seats several hundred)

Heaven was sweet scented and cool.

Hell was hot and stinky.

It was an experience not to be missed by ADULTS.

It is not appropriate for children, but it is very thought provoking and quite an experience.

I would recommend it to any adult strong in the faith. I had my husband and minister go the following year.

You will never forget it.
