I’m a prop maker and costumer both semiprofessional. I’ve been a huge fan of the Hellboy comics and films for years. In the comics and films many of the characters are Catholic and use rosaries, medals, crucifixes, and various relics to combat the forces of evil.

I have recreated many of the props from the films and other sources and I’m considering making a complete costume of one of the characters.

My question is if it’s sacrilegious to use replicas or real Catholic items as props? The rosary, crucifix and St. Benedict medal that are kept in the collection have not been blessed or anything similar. This question also pertains to other franchises that may use religious items.

I’ve also included pictures of my collection for reference in case there’s an issue with how I’ve been displaying them. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I wouldn’t worry about it. I find Hellboy a very interesting character myself and enjoyed the movies. I think as long as its not done in a mocking or sacrilegious manner than its not really a problem. I wouldn’t get them blessed unless you planned on only using them for religious purpose.

Personally I am a huge fan of Father Alexander Anderson from the Hellsing manga/anime’s and wouldn’t mind making a costume of him.

So long as you are not providing in situations where someone is mocking Chirst or the faith.

I don’t know the Hellboy series at all, but in general when I see Catholics or Catholic practices (eg. rosaries) in fiction I don’t mind if there’s a moderate amount of inaccuracy, or caricaturing, so long as it’s not done with ill-intent, or is blasphemous. It’s a awful lot better than painting us Catholics out of society altogether.

You’ve actually perked my interest in Hellboy.

Go for it, and enjoy your hobby! 😀

The artwork is what has kept me hooked. I still enjoy the stories but like you said the writining is sloppy a lot of the time.
