Hello My Eastern Catholic Brethren. I just wanted to say that i love our “other lung”, and that in Courtland, Ontario, We had a Greek Catholic Parish. I loved the Mass there, and i Altar served for quite a bit. But i am a Latin-rite Catholic. I am not here to bash anyone, (just saying to the moderators!), I just want to know, why do we have a still vislbe “rift” between us, as it is quite clear in some of the other threads started. I just bought a Chotki and look very much forward to saying it. The Icons are very, very, beautiful (and they are used to pray too i know!) and the Mass is Very, mystical. I am very much in favor of both the Latin Mass, and the Eastern Rite Mass, as both are very mystical, both are very rich in tradition, i admit, sometimes the NO Mass can be watered down, but even then, Our LORD is still sacrificed on the altar. But i have been to Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, and the NO mass there is very traditional, latin parts, except for the collect and the readings, and the prayers of the faithful. So even the NO can be very beautiful, mystical and traditional when done right. Now i just love the Rosary, Devotion to the Sacred Heart, My saints, etc., which i would have a very hard time giving up, but i am more than willing to incorporate Eastern practices etc. So, Please Keep the Eastern Heritage, as if we dont, we lose one half of the beauty of the faith, but, can we like quit trying to say my horse is better than your horse, this goes for the Latins and Easterns out there!, I love Both, and dont we both profess the Apostles Creed, Loyalty to the same Holy Father, Have the same 7 Sacraments, and worship the same JESUS CHRIST? so how could we mantian the charisma of our seperate Rites, and yet mantain, unity?? any ideas?

You are directing this to our Eastern Catholic brethern, yes?

If I may, I would like to offer some suggestions even though I am a Latin rite Catholic. Ok, I believe one way for Latin Catholics and Eastern Catholics to truly come together is to stop comparing ourselves as I have seen some suggestion from some in the past. What our Eastern Catholic brethren have to offer is indeed something truly profound that can be found in their Divine Liturgy as well as in other places such as their theology, devotions, etc.

I encourage every Latin Catholic to go and experience the Eastern heritage of the Catholic Church. One way to do so is in their Divine Liturgy and as well I would advise our Eastern Brethern to come and experience the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. We can truly learn much from each other as we both make the Catholic Church in which the sole Church of Christ subsists and is.

I hope to go to a Divine Liturgy soon as well but unfortunately there is not one available in my area for the moment.

God bless.

The Catholic Church addressed this directly since about time of Pope Leo XII (pope from 1878 to 1903). From 1964 we have the Decree, Orientalium Ecclesiarum.

vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decree_19641121_orientalium-ecclesiarum_en.html

And Blessed Pope John Paul II promulgated the revised canon laws for the Latin church (1983) and introduced eastern Catholic body of law CCEO in 1990. Yet, the promulgation was by the Pope rather than specifically by the eastern bishops so it was not ideal, even though the eastern Catholic bishops did work on their canon laws.

The small numbers of eastern Catholics in comparison to the number of Latin Catholics tends to exclude them I believe. Yet the 1983 CIC canon law requires the Latin Church to care for the eastern Churches. There is also established (see Pastor Bonus) the Congregation for Oriental Churches (a dicastry of the Vatican).

(Apostolic Churches: Catholic 85% with 1.5% eastern, Orthodox 15%.)

I guess there are just simply a lot of folks who don’t know what they’re talking about! 🙂

I love our other lung though, THE MASS IS VERY BEUATIFUL, Charisimatic, and Holy. Lets face it people. JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF, IS SACRIFICED ON THE ALTARS OF THE PRIEST SAYING either the NO, EF, Maronite, Melkite, Greek etc Rites. its Our LORD HIMSELF!
