"Sex Out Loud begins efforts against birth-control ban
Published: Friday, April 29, 2005

UW-Madison students are beginning to organize against proposed legislation that would ban University Health Services from distributing the morning-after pill.

Sex Out Loud hosted a forum Thursday that allowed students to receive information about the bill, authored by Rep. Dan LeMahieu, R-Oostburg. LeMahieu proposed the morning-after pill ban, which would extend to all UW System schools, after UHS ran advertisements offering emergency contraception in the student newspapers.

“There has been a growing group of legislators who are willing … to bow to the extremists’ promotion of the notion that birth control pills cause abortions and consequently should not be taken,” Rep. Therese Berceau, D-Madison, said.

Scott Spear, director of clinical services for UHS, explained while there is a small chance the birth control pill prevents implantation after fertilization-and some women do choose not to take it for that reason-the pill is different from RU-486, the so-called “abortion pill.”

“The extreme right, I’m not going to call them ‘the right to life,’ I’m going to call him the ‘right to lie’ because they’re lying by saying pregnancy begins at fertilization,” Spear said. “That means that an infertile couple that has their sperm and egg combined in vitro fertilization in a test tube is pregnant. … You’re not pregnant until the egg is implanted.”

Representatives from Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and United Council were also on hand to begin organizing students against the legislation. United Council hopes to gather 75,000 signatures against the bill from campuses across the state to deliver to state legislators.

Basically, like it said, the 2 campus newspapers, Daily Cardinal and Badger Herald ran ads for the University Health Service (UHS) for the “morning-after pill” and condoms. I was rather shocked when I saw it too…

So anyways, if you live in Wisconsin, are in the UW system or have children in the UW system, I think we should give Rep. LeMahieu a call or something. Cause it wont be hard for them to find 75,000 signatures…
