Can anyone help me find statistics on the good work done by the Catholic Church? Especially on how it compares to other religious or secular organizations? How much money it spends on the needy, how many children it has schooled (esp. free schooling) hospitals that have cared for the sick (again, free is good).
Also, I need stats on the rates of abuse and how celibacy has nothing to do with sexual abuse. Comparisons would be especially great.

Here’s some good articles on the sex abuse scandal. The first one includes some comparative stats. The second one mostly includes figures for the problem within the Church:
CARA is a research group out of Georgetown that does lots of research about the Church in the U.S. Here is a link to their bulletin with some facts and figures:

cara.georgetown.edu/bulletin/index.htm

They focus more on things like Mass attendance and such, but they do list the number of Catholic schools and the number of students in Catholic schools, which might be a helpful figure to know for your purposes.

Seems like doing some research on Catholic Charities might help you, as well. And any other Catholic charitable organizations, hospitals, etc.

Also, and excellent book is “What’s so great about Christianiaty” by Dinesh DeSouza.

For example, slavery as accepted by all countries until Jesus founded His Church which taught that since all men are equal in dignity before God, then slavery is wrong.
Thus the Church elminated slavery by law, in Catholic countries, till the new world was discovrered. When the New World was discovered, there were few laws in the new lands, and the greedy thought they could become rich through slavery, Then again, it was the Church in Catholic countries that continued to teach slavery was evil, and protestant Christians who held on to this Catholic teahing who eliminated slavery in England and in the United States. Thus it was Christians who forced their religious beliefs on the governments of countries that elimated slavery from the world.

The idea that women are equal in value to men, was also introduced by the Church, based on the same teaching. Before the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus to proclaim the gospel, the civilizations at that time regarded women as inferior to men, just above slaves. The Church forced this novel idea that since women are equal in dignity to men in God’s eyes, then the states laws must treat them the same way.

The idea that newborn infants should **not **be “exposed” (murdered) was also a new concept the early Church forced upon the state. Because at that time the rule of the Romans, Greeks and the rest of the world, was if an infant was unwanted, it was perfectly legal and good to put it out on the street to die. Thus today if infants are deliberately left to die by the parents, they are prosecuted for murder.

The idea of freedom of religion comes from the Catholic Church and is a religious idea forced upon the state governments in her early history. Before then, Romans had to worship the Roman gods, Greeks had to worship the Greek gods, etc. The early Christians were persecuted by the Roman authorities because they were considered athiests for not worshipping the Roman gods.

The idea that women cannot be forced into a marriage they do not want, comes from the Catholic Church. The Church that if a marriage was not freely entered into by both parties, it is not a valid marriage.

There are many, many other ideas that we accept today which originated from the Catholic Church, who learned all her teachings from Jesus himself.

Thus, it is not only the good the Church does today in social services, but her ideas she learned from Jesus transformed the world (saved the world) from the misery it was in.

Also the Church today, not only in here socials services, but primarily in her teachings, enables men to overcome their own sins, and thus bring a measure of peace and joy to all. For example, Christians have a divorce rate equal or higher to athiests. But those Protestant Christians in which both couples woship twice a week have only a 7% divorce rate.
When both Catholic couples go to Sunday mass, their divorce rate goes down to 2%

Since crime is directly associated with broken homes, then marriage stability greatly helps society. For example, boys who come from divorced homes have a 10 times higher incarceration rate

Thus, through the grace recieved at mass, parents can learn to forgive each other, avoid divorce and have stable families which benefits all of society.

I don’t think the only thing our Church needs is defending. I believe the truth would help us more. There is so much abuse in our Church even in the form of secrecy. In my area there is a priest who has two small rural parishes. They have been overseen by the same priest for the last ten years. Well five years ago a woman returned to church and began going to both of these two churches, wanting to fully emerse herself in the faith. One of the churches was the first church she ever went to and where she was baptized, received first communion and the sacrament of confirmation.

The priest at this chruch reached out to the troubled woman and began spiritual direction. Soon after, they began to develope a close relationship. Spending more and more time together. Going places together. Each day she became more and more active in the church and closer to the priest. Now this woman opened up her heart and her life to this priest. She shared with him all of her fears and all the abuses that she had suffered in life. In turn he reached out to help her. He made her a close personal friend. Took her into his life, his home (both the rectory and his cabin in the country) and bed. It started slowly. First he would kiss her, then he would slip his tongue into her mouth and tell her that she could not do that. As if she had just done that, instead of him. He would touch her breast in passing and say pardon me. Then he would engage her in intimate conversation. Then he would grab her breast and squeeze them. Now this woman had been abused for most of her life. This was I suppose a step up for her. Well this went on until they were in bed together and spending hours each day on the phone and even in person together. Going to his cabin in the country and to other getaway places. Her husband was really wondering but this man is a priest and can be trusted with his wife.

This priest eventually after four years hired this woman to do the church census and then as the new bookkeeper and secretary. Hmmm. Well the woman found countless things wrong with the books and began to fix them. Hundreds of hours and months passed and finally the two churches books were for the most part clean and orderly. Little pay did she receive, she would work over 50 hours a week cleaning up his mess that he had allowed the previous woman to make and by the way paying her nicely to mess up the books and this woman he paid little. After all she was his “friend” and should just do these things for him at give it no thought. Why did it matter if she got paid, after all she had spent the last four plus years doing for him anything he ask.

Then one day he announced his intent to move on. This woman was devestated, she thought this man/priest loved her. Then he blamed her, said that she was a sinful woman that had seduced him and that he had to move on but that they could continue to be friends and see each other often. Well one thing led to another and this woman began to act out in chidish ways. Wanting him to see how upset she was at his leaving. One night she even went as far as to visit his cabin while he was having dinner with his long time lover, who has a cabin right up the road. In fact this is how he come to have the cabin in this gated country retreat. When his brother the MSGR started to move even higher up the religious ladder he (this priests brother) decided to sell his cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks where this priest as well as his brother had brought their women. So it being sold this wonderful priest had to find another honeymoon suite for their women. In luck he was, as I said his girlfriend showed him the cabin and he with his brother bought it up quickly.
Anyway, this woman went out there and took his other girlfriends license plates off and laid them next to the cabin and left. The woman just wanted him to know how hurt she was at his actions and his coldness. The woman has obvious maturity issues due to her sexual abuse as a child and young adult.

Well that did not go over well with his other girlfriend, she began to threaten him that if he did not get rid of this woman she would sue him and come clean about their 38 year affair. So he thought it over and the woman helped him to make up his mind. She came to dinner on Sunday night and when the conversation turned to the new priest that was to come, she mentioned to the priest that she would make use of the sacrament of reconciliation. Telling him that she was unable to do so for many years due to their relationship. The next moring she arrived for weekday mass and went to the rectory to count money with the other money counter and he would not even speak to her. He acted as if she was a monster or worse. That very day he went straight to the Vicar for Priests and the Bishop and a church lawyer and told a tiny bit of their relationship. Painting this woman as a liar, a cheat and an all around bad person. He set her up and discounted her at every turn. He returned home that evening and terminated her at once as he was instructed to do by the diocese. No thought was given to this womans side, no thought to her mental health. He just used her to the fullest extent and then threw her away.

Problem solved! Now his long time lover was happy, he was happy and so was his church.

I know I have no ability to write and I know I am so upset by the treatment of this woman by our Church that I can barely keep my mind straight.

If this story is true, it is indeed very sad. Things like this regrettably happen, but it is far from the norm among our clergy.

This is true and certainly there is a lot more to it. Did you not understand the treatment of this woman by Our Church? All from the Bishop, Vicar of Priests, Lawyers, her priest, and anyone else he told all pounced on her and for fear I can not speak up in her defense. I know this priest and all the above mentioned men of God. None are concerned for this woman, but only for the secrecy that will protect them so they may continue to do such acts to others. Perhaps in your area this may not be the norm, but do you really understand the inner workings of a priests life? Are you a priest? We all have skeletons in our closest so we are unable to throw stones at one another. I can tell you that in the St. Louis Archdiocese, this is indeed common. We are a brotherhood and we stick together but that is not always good. When it comes to this kind of behavior it is devastating for all involved. There is an inner circle and this woman entered in and now was cast out. Many of us got to know her and liked her. Her youth made many of our hearts dance with joy. We are all older priests and her naivety was a blessing to us. Now my heart aches because I can not defend her and I know she did not deserve the treatment she has received. Many people believe that priests are above others. This is not the case, we too struggle with the day to day battles. Perhaps more then the laity. Many of your very priest that you hold up so highly have now or in the past done as this priest has done. Many of us have had women from time to time, or men. Then we suffer guilt and attempt to rectify the situation and someone always gets hurt. Usually this is done in secret and in private, no one is the wiser. Other times someone who is not mature enough to handle the situation gets hurt and that is what happened with this woman. Her suppleness allowed her to be used and hurt. Please do not be so blind and if you are a fellow brother please do not dupe those that are here on this board, only in honesty and truth will we become a stronger Church. When will we learn this lesson? When will the laity stop holding us up above themselves? When will we stop enjoying this?

In the light of the recent Irish abuse report and the orgy of anti catholic and anti celibacy ranting it has occasioned it would be interesting to know incidence of abuse in atheist secular institutions…were it not covered up we would know !!!
