I have noticed many readers asking about scrupulosity, and since I have worked with the Redemptorist Priests, I can offer you some help.

For someone who goes to confession regulary, one of the most important things the penitent can do is find a priest who is a good confessor for him. If their advice goes against what your spiritual director said, especially one who knows you well, I’d follow the advice of the spiritual director.

Scrupulosity is a very demanding effect; one can only ask in prayer for the gift of trust from God that one is forgiven and loved by God.

I do not think that you have to explain yourself to a new confessor or to a confessor who doesn’t know you. This is if you already have seen a spiritual director and he has told you what to do.] Find a confessor you trust, who let’s you use the advice of your spiritual director and you should be fine. If he is not available, say an act of contrition.

The advice is that you follow that of your confessor and spiritual director that God has placed in your life. Often scrupulous individuals go from priest to priest seeking assurance or testing advice, and that is not helpful.

The Church teaches that sins that are not confessed because they were forgotten are nevertheless forgiven.

No one is held to do the impossible. That is, no one can ask someone to do something that is impossible for him to do.

Remember, God wants you to be at peace with Him and the Church.

Sometimes, scrupulosity can become an OCD disorder. In Sacred Scriptures, even Jesus prayed, “if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” [MT 26:39] St. Paul accepted his sting of the flesh. He said it was weakness that he found his real strength. His weakness kept him from becoming proud, kept him reaching out to the source of all strength.

It is always God who comes looking for us. When we sin, we hide ourselves away from God. God calls us, " Where are you?" That call of God has followed humankind down through the centuries. God will not allow us to hide in our shame. He wants us to live without fear in his presence.

I want to share with those who are scrupulous a list of the what is called the TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR THE SCRUPULOUS, written by Redemptorist Fr. Ernest Miller, CSSR.

1] You shall not repeat a sin in confession when it has been told in any previous confession, even where there is a doubt that it was told or a doubt that it was told in a sufficiently adequate and complete way.

2] You shall not tell doubtful sins in confession, but only clear and certain ones.

3] You shall not repeat your penance after confession or any of the words of your penance on the score that you had distractions or may not have said the words properly. [Edited]
