I’ve seen a number of posts from people dealing with scrupulosity and it’s something that I’ve struggled with in the past. In my case I had slight OCD and got help through a good counselor.

Another thing that really helped me that I’d like to share is a book called Understanding Scrupulosity by Fr. Thomas Santa. It’s a great resource that really made me see the issue in a new light.

I went through a few years of scruples that I thought would drive me insane. I was cured in Confession, although I dont think anyway Father intended to cure me, and I certainly did not expect a cure. After giving me Absolution, Father simply said “Be happy” and I felt a great great weight lifted and was cured and never had a scruple since. I could not believe what had happened.

If one can find one I am a real advocate of a good spiritual director and nowadays here in Australia people, including religious and suitable laypeople, can be trained as spiritual directors. A good director is pure gold.

Medication can help with OCD.

Also, improving one’s significant relationships, in particular marital. Underlying this I believe is hatred of self. Thus the need for acceptance of self, most importantly in relation to the other.

One thing I always tell the scrupulous on these boards is, as kindly as possible, to get off these boards. These forums provide a plethora of answers, sometimes conflicting which will only add to the confusion, and even fear, of the poor soul.

If one wants to be freed from scrupulosity, they must have ONE Father Confessor, and they must OBEY Father Confessor in EVERYTHING, and never to second-guess him or question his judgment.

Good advice! One thing that really contributed to my bouts with scrupulosity was the fact that I’d worry about something, get online to find an answer and then become even more crazy because of all of the conflicting things I’d read.

Excellent advise when suffering scruples for one not to seek opinions/advice from a number of people which can often confuse things even further. Good spiritual direction is pure gold. The very real temptation with scruples is to think that an advice giver does not really understand one and to seek advice from many until one gets the answer one wanted in the first place; hence:
