I have been reading the Bible through for years. At first I got really hung up on some of the Old Testament “Nyquil” chapters. But I realized that while my intellect was numbed with all the boring sections, my spirit and soul was being fed. Gradually, I began to see changes…changes that have led me to love the Catholic faith even more. I started with the Tyndale Through the Bible books which had an Old Testament passage, a New Testament passage, a Psalm passage and a Proverb passage. Over the year’s I’d vary the versions, but the pattern was the same. Then I discoved a through the year Catholic bible. I’m at work and can’t remember the exact title, but am reading it now because it includes the Deutero-Canonical books. It is a bit different than the others in that you only read a passage from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament. Psalms and Proverbs are read in a sequence of the old. It’s not as nicely laid out and is a bit uneven in how much you read each day, but it is very good. It is the RSV version and has a quote from a saint of the church as well for each day.
I have grown a ton by just reading the scriptures each morning. Try it and give it time to feed your spirit. Don’t worry about the dry periods. Those often are the periods where the Spirit is working on your soul.
Hope that incourages you.
