I remember reading a biography of an influential theologian recently which stated that he had never actually studied theology. Off the top of my head, I thought it was Hans Urs Von Balthasar, but upon re-reading his biography and with the knowledge that he was a priest, that’s obviously not who it was. I thought then, maybe Karl Barth, but that doesn’t seem to be right either. Can anyone help me out? If not, are there examples of influential theologians who were not formally educated in theology that you can think of?
