I couldn’t understand this passage from Intro to devout life. This speaks abt spiritual retirement. I can’t understand how to make it. . Can anyone pls refer to the following chapters in the Introduction to devout life by St. Francis de Sales and explain me on how to make the spiritual retirement. Please refer chapter XII and Chapter XIII.

CHAPTER XII. On Spiritual Retirement.
CHAPTER XIII. On ejaculations, holy thoughts and aspirations

I read the chapters. He says that when you are busy during the day and you’re not able to find quiet time alone to pray to God, you can find a quiet place in your heart to pray and think about God. Even if you can’t retire to a quiet place physically, because of work or family duties, you can “retire” spiritually. He’s just talking about taking a moment or two throughout the day to pause inwardly and contemplate God.

The second chapter you mentioned he’s talking about how you should practice thinking about God always by connecting events that you might experience into something holy, making comparisons to your relationship with God, and to spontaneously pray to him, even out loud.

That’s what I got out of it. Hope it helps.

Peace

“Retirement” seems to mean what we would normally call a “retreat”.

Teresa of Avila likens this kind of “retirement” to a turtle drawing itself into its shell.
