I live in the Des Moines area. We are Latin Rite Catholics, but I was wondering if:

A) Could someone point me to a good book, website, or anything that could help me to understand better the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches (in union with Rome). I am interested in learning more.

B) Does anyone know where the nearest place to Des Moines, IA area where I could attend the Liturgy (is it called Divine Liturgy?- I’m pretty clueless right now).
Thanks much!

Welcome.

If you look back at other threads here in the Eastern Catholicism section you can find responses to others who have asked similar questions.
Just to be more specific were you thinking of the Find-A-Parish on byzbath?

Another resource on that site is About Byzantine Catholics
**Annunciation, **Homer Glen , IL

Fr. Loya, the pastor at Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church has a weekly radio program “Light of the East” archived here and broadcast live Sundays at 5:30AM Eastern time on many Catholic Radio stations. (This term “Light of the East” comes from the 1995 Apostolic Letter of His Holiness John Paul II of blessed memory Orientale Lumen. You can see descriptions in the archives of what Fr Tom covers in a given broadcast. The program is intended to help spread awareness of our Eastern and Oriental Catholic Churches.

This piece “Information and Theology” from St. Elias the Prophet Church parish (an exceptional website) quotes from other Vatican documents related to our Eastern Churches.

Other excellent interviews available on line include:
“Who are Eastern Catholics?” PART 1 and
“Who are Eastern Catholics?” PART 2 with Fr. Maximos of Holy Resurrection Monastery
Eastern Catholic Theology PART 1 and
Eastern Catholic Theology PART 2 with Fr. Abbot Nicholas of Holy Resurrection Monastery
Fasting in the Byzantine Church Year and
Feasting in the Byzantine Church Year with Fr. Moses of Holy Resurrection Monastery

If you need help getting in touch with the priest in Omaha at Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church, let me know. Sunday Divine Liturgy is 9:30 a.m. Fr. Bohdan is very welcoming and personable. God bless.

Oh, thanks! I have been inconsistent in my reading threads on the forums here. I need to start doing that, because I know there’s a lot I can learn just from reading on here. It’s just that, for one thing, I am pretty clueless on the Eastern Rite Churches except on a couple things, and sometimes it’s a little hard for me to sift through the stuff here because Orthodox info seems to get mixed in. Again, that may just be my own misunderstandings.

I actually love our parish here in DSM- we belong to the Basilica of St. John, and our priest is a wonderful Benedictine monk. You can find some of his homilies on YT. It’s just that our Diocese here is pretty liberal for the most part, and now our bishop has decided that they are raising the age/grade for Confirmation from 8th gr. to 10th- which I disagree with, it affects both of my children, but I realize that’s probably for another thread.

Again, thanks for the info.

You probably know this, but in many of the Eastern Churches the triple Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation (Confirmation) and First Holy Eucharist are conferred sequentially on the newly baptized infant.

The St. Elias website saintelias.com/ca/home is an excellent start for basic information on the Eastern Catholic Churches, and I have a pdf from the Knights of Columbus* Veritas *series written by a Ukrainian Catholic bishop I can also email if you like (send the address via private message).

My wife and I just got home from a daily Mass there. Most beautiful mass I have ever attended. That will be the parish we visit whenever we visit family. Yesterday, we went to the Cathedral downtown. The facility was incredible but the mass? Not so much…

You are very lucky to have such an amazing liturgy and church.

Peace,
