I was the maid of honor at my friends wedding this past May. I got about 3 sentences in and burst into tears. Thankfully, only my boyfriend (now fiance) knew it wasn’t from emotion but complete and total stage fright.
I started by thanking both sets of parents for throwing such a beautiful wedding. I complimented the bride on her grace under the pressure of organizing the whole shindig and how I could only hope that I could do the same when it was my turn. At which point I glanced down the table at my date and said “But no pressure X” (This got a laugh) Then I introduced myself. I stated that I knew the bride for a long time, but that I refused to say how long, because it made me feel like the geriatric I work with. Then I burst into tears, but the rest of my speech basically talked about how the bride is a wonderful friend who makes a great effort to maintain her friendships no matter how many miles may be between her and the other person. I then simply asked everyone to raise their glasses in a toast to the bride and groom, a beautiful wedding and awesome reception and the hopes for a very happily ever after.
