Help on Praying To and For my Deceased Grandma

Hey Guys,

You guys have helped a lot in the past and I figured you could probably help out again. Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I tried to search the site, but I didn’t find much that helped.

My great grandma (a wonderful Catholic woman - probably one of the best role models in my life thus far, especially since I’m thinking about converting - her grace and peace, even after surviving the death of both her only son and her husband were truly inspiring) passed away this weekend. I’ll be going to a Rosary for her tonight and her funeral mass tomorrow.

Anyway, I was wondering 2 things. I know that those who have passed on can continue to pray for us here on Earth. Does this apply to those in Purgatory as well as Heaven? Is it ever too early to ask for the prayers of the deceased? Should I wait for some time or can I start asking her to pray for me now?

Also, how would I go about praying for her? As a non-Catholic, do my prayers affect her state in Purgatory at all? What prayers would be good for me to say to her?

All prayers count regardless of who says them. They do not have to be formal prayers or prayers out of a book. They can be a simple message from the heart such as “dear Heavenly Father, please take my grandmother into your loving arms and welcome her into your kingdom.” I think our own prayers are just as worthy as those we say in a formal setting. I am sorry for your loss. Grandmothers are very special people.

Yes! The Holy Souls can pray for us and its never too early to ask for a deceased person’s prayers.

It is my understanding that our prayers are beneficial as long as we are in a state of grace, although I may be wrong. I’m not sure how that would work for non Catholics

Psalm 130 (De Profundis) is a perfect prayer for the dead. Another is the Requiem Aeternam. It goes "Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

sorry about your grandma dying…

of course you can pray to your grandma…i personally don’t think that you would have to wait for some time…i think that if you asked her for help then she would ask god to help you…

i don’t think your grandma being catholic and you not being catholic would affect your grandma in anyway…your prayers aren’t going to get her kept in purgatory or anything like that…remember that we are all god’s children at the end of the day and that all prayer is pleasing to god…and any prayer that you offer up for your grandma will be pleasing to god because it will have come from your heart…

remember when praying to your grandma that she is not the one ‘granting’ the favours…god does that…you can pray and tell her your problem or whatever you need help with and ask her to intercede and pray to god to grant it if it is according to his holy will…

heres a prayer that i say when i am asking the holy souls in purgatory for a favour…(you pray for them and obtain relief and deliverance for them…so that in turn they will help you)

what i do first is tell the holy souls whatever my problem is and ask them to pray and intercede to god for me…then i tell them what prayers i am going to pray for their relief and deliverance from purgatory…then i say jesus, through the immaculate heart of mary, and also through her prayers and intercessions, i now pray and offer to you (name prayers) for an abundance of relief and deliverance for all the holy souls in purgatory…and i ask for my prayers (name favour) to be granted through the prayers and intercessions of all the holy souls in purgatory

you could use this pray to ask your grandma for a favour and at the same time pray for her too…(just change the wording holy souls for grandma)… or you could leave the words as they are and add grandma on to the sentence ( e.g through the prayers and intercessions of all the holy souls in purgatory and especially grandma)…that way your grandma and all the holy souls will be praying for you and your request…and in turn your prayers will not only help your grandma they will benefit alot of the holy souls in purgatory too

Your grandma surely was such a wonderful and good person who has lived a life filled with love of God, of neighbors and of the Catholic church. She surely is a blessing to all.

The souls in heaven especially Our Blessed Mother Mary always pray for us and help us. They are our friends in heaven who we can always turn to for help, guidance, protection.

The poor souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves. It is up to us souls here on earth to pray for them for the relief of their souls for they suffer in Purgatory, so that without delay, they may enter heaven, and be with God for all eternity. Since the poor souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves, they are very grateful and in turn pray to God to bless and help those who pray for them. They help us in our daily lives including protecting us against evil.

We can always pray to the souls in heaven and in purgatory
anytime.

God never wastes any prayer. We may not see the results or the answer to our prayers immediately or they may not even be answered in our lifetime because He answers our prayers in His own time not ours according to His most Holy Will. So, we just have to have an unwavering faith knowing that Our Good God will hear our prayers, petitions and supplications.

The best prayer that you can offer your great grandma is to offer holy mass for her because the holy sacrifice of the mass is the highest form of prayer because Our Good Lord Jesus Himself is made present during holy mass, most especially in the holy eucharist where His very own Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity is present. Jesus, Our Good God, Who is not limited by time and space, makes present at every holy mass His sacrifice on the Cross making it possible for us to be at the foot of Calvary. Such an awesome moment beyond human comprehension!

You can call any Catholic Church to offer mass for her.

Since you are thinking of converting, when you become a Catholic, you can also offer you holy communion for her soul. Now that would be awesome since what you will be receiving in holy communion is Jesus Himself, not bread, not wine, not in memory of Him, but Jesus Himself in all His fullness (Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity)! God who is unceasingly adored by all the angels and saints in heaven!

For now you can pray the rosary daily or as often as you want to. Ask God daily for pardon for all the sins that you have committed, for having offended God Who is all Good and deserving of all our love. Offer everything (your pain, sufferings, sorrows, difficulties etc.) to Jesus through Mary in union with His suffering on the Cross in behalf and for the whole humanity, poor souls in purgatory, the dying and the unborn 'till the end of times, in that way, you are helping a multitude of souls not only in your lifetime here on earth but past it. I always think of it as a gift that keeps on giving made possible only through Our Lord Jesus Christ who is Our eternal God. When you get to heaven you will be so surprised on how many souls whom you have never met will be thanking you for the prayers and offerings that you have made while you are here on earth.

Praying for you on your journey of faith, in coming home to the Holy Catholic Church that Jesus Christ Himself founded 2,000 years ago. Jesus never promised for it be easy but it is surely worth it!
