Help out a college student's search

I know it’s been posted before, but what translation would one recommend to a freshman college student looking to buy a better Bible?

I currently have the New American Bible and the NSRV (iirc). Yeah, not the best. :-p

But, keep in mind, I’m looking at keeping it UNDER $50 (unless someone convinces me to get something that costs a bit more, but is much better). I’m not talking about the acquisition of the Navarre Bible ($400? not that much cash right now! :-P).

The Bible would be used for my personal reading, daily prayers (I will begin doing a form of the Spiritual Exercises on campus), daily reflection, and for Bible study with the Catholic group on campus. Plus, it’ll probably sit on my desk looking good.

I have heard the Douay-Rheims version is good, but so is the RSV-CE edition by Ignatius Press.

The Douay Rhiems from Baronius would fit the budget. Its $43.95 from allcatholicbooks.com for the regular sized one. I bought a pocket one from them, but I think for now its out of stock.

With the DRV one can be confident that what one is reading is literally what is from the Latin Vulgate. It should be noted that is is from the Latin Vulgate that some Greek and Hebrew manuscripts referred to, to restore them. Real moroccan leather, gold gilding, cream bible paper. Its a treasure to behold 🙂

Other than that there still is the Confraternity Bible from Sinag-Tala. Its the product of Confraternity of Christain Doctrine revising the DRV in the 1940s. Beautiful murals printed on the hardcover.

I have the older Ignatius Bible and not the newer RSV-CE 2nd Edition, so I am not able to comment on it.
