My friend contacted me and is very upset. He says he lit the candles this morning for Mass but then noticed his hands smell very bad. He said he discovered he had remnents of human feces on his hands. He ran out of Mass and washed his hands about 5 times.

He says what happened he feels is incredibly sacreligious and he says he wants to almost kill himself! What do I say to him!!!

Tell him that he wasn’t being disrespectful on purpose. The intention of an action carries as much weight as the action itself. Tell him to was his hands before going into church and he shouldn’t have that problem again.

Not to worry.

First, he did not do this on purpose, and secondly, it’s probably not the first time this has happened. Remember that for much of our past, and still in many places, bathroom resources are not the best.

I hope he was not being serious saying he wanted to kill himself over this.

I think he was just over reacting at the time, he says he is scrupulous… i met him on the internet and we talk often… thanks for the help !
