Raised as a Catholic, Buttigieg, a former Democratic presidential candidate, is a gay man who is in a same sex marriage. Along with most of the other Democratic presidential candidates, he announced that he supports the murder of unborn babies through abortion until the moment of birth.

For some time, Notre Dame has appeared to be falling away from Catholic belief. Any suggestions?

Pete’s going to be doing poli sci and social research as part of a panel. He’s well qualified for the job (former Rhodes Scholar). He’s not teaching theology. What’s the big deal?

Also, you do know his father was a professor at Notre Dame for decades, right? I think his mom was on the faculty too at one point. I don’t doubt there was a little bit of favoritism in hiring Pete to teach there.

Buttigieg even talked about that “woman having the right to do anything with the baby if it survives abortion” which, I would think would be tantamount to infanticide and particularly gruesome.

I’m not sure what you’re asking—suggestions to do what?
I feel this is another instance of Notre Dame sliding far, far away from Catholic belief. It’s heartbreaking. I hope to start a letter campaign to urge Nortre Dame to reconsider…

It’s so sad to think this man was originally raised as Catholic. He needs our prayers, as does Notre Dame.

ND is a fine school, and will remain a fine school with or without Pete.

If I thought a sound university education was a jeopardizing my children’s education, I would send them to a seminary or to a monastic order.

How about a a letter campaign to urge Nortre Dame to reconsider…

Why not to a faithful Catholic university?

And Notre Dame will not remain a “fine school” for devout Catholics if it no longer is faithful to the Catholic church.

In addition to sending a letter to Notre Dame, all graduates should announce they will no longer financially support the school unless it returns to being faithful to the Catholic church.

All high school teachers who talk with students about where to attend, should be very firm about warning Catholic students to stay away from Notre Dame.

I’m afraid this is old news. Notre Dame has been CINO for many many years

@annem, well I see Notre Dame is not on that list, and probably has not been for a long time.

Is it news to you that it has lost its Catholicity?

Do you fear his ideas will rub off on students or other faculty? Don’t worry about students. They rarely pay attention to their professors’ opinions anyway.

Having a hard time with the CINO label…perhaps NCEFM (not Catholic Enough For Me) is better? CINO opens the door to telling people they really are not As Catholic as I am.

Nah, I think CINO is reasonable enough, as terms go.

There are actual documented guidelines as to standards an institution is supposed to meet to call itself ‘Catholic’. (Forget what document, someone else quoted it on another of these threads.)

If an institution doesn’t meet those standards, I think it’s reasonable to casually refer to it as CINO (besides which, casual conversations are where the acronym pops up, and you can’t police casual conversations), and it’d actually obscure the truth to pretend that this is just our personal opinion.

Call me a CINO then, because I realize my faults and know I am a pilgrim under going conversion and always seeking mercy even if I have to endure the disdain of those who think they are “real” Catholics…interesting the beatitudes say blessed are those who are prosecuted for his sake, and it turns out many of those persecuting call them selves Catholics.

. . . . This is just an online conversation, no one’s out to get you, and the people you are disdaining as ‘persecutors’ may be taking actions more disposed to charity right now, than you are.
