Hi. I would like advice and/or references to apologetics that would help me defend the Church on the following issues/claims:
  1. Vatican-Hitler/Mussolini alliances
  2. Pius V ‘swore’ that the papal right to temporal authority over all Christendom would be eternal
  3. Gregory VII claimed to be “King of Kings”
  4. 95 popes claimed the divine authority to dispose of and appoint emperors and kings
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Firstly let me express my reservation about respond to people who dredge through 2000 years of history to come up with negative stuff about the Catholic Church. Any institution 2000 years old is bound to have some skeletons in its cupboard.

Secondly, nothing you have outlined about various popes says , if true, anything but the fact that they were human and fallible. None of the areas you outlined have to do with Faith or Morals.

Thirdly, why spend hours trawling through references for people who are only going to come up with another list of accusations against the Church. I would feel that my time could be more profitable spent on my own formation or evangelising people who seem to be listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit re the Church.

Fourthly, if people have made these claims it is up to *them * to provide the sources confirming them. If they do provide you withsources insist on exact citing not just the name of some encyclical because they are soooooo long. Check that the sources are original documents, not what someone said the Church/pope said.

Fifthly, good luck and God bless.
