Help: Priest using crude language

Yes, it is true that to say, “by doing such and so we are acting like an a**” meaning jackass, is correct English. But, I think we can all agree that the word in that context now has a vulgar conotation of backside.

Kathleen, I’d speak to the priest and ask him to be more careful. There are many ways he can get across the same info without seeming to cuss. Pray for him also that he can break the habit if it is a habitual way of speaking.

Have you ever heard in the homily a priest use crude language? Is it ok to use this in the homily?

Our priest uses the word a** three times and now we have to explain to the children whey we don use that word unless it is for a donkey. By the way as for information the homily was on service to the church of time, talent and treasure.

How would you explain this to a child that has been taught not to use crude language?

What did the priest say when you mentioned the problems it caused it to him?

If it bothers you, tell him that it embarrasses you to hear that language in front of your children. Tell him how it affect you. Don’t make judgemental statements, just talk about how uncomfortable it makes you feel.

I’d say that this is just a sign of the times, generally standards for language and dress have gone down in our anything goes society. It used to be that gentlemen didn’t talk this way in front of ladies, but times have changed.

To the OP: I have certainly heard vulgar words from priests, perhaps even used in homily – Something about the locker-room atmosphere in the minor seminary, I guess.

In fact, I am sure I have heard the holy Franciscans quote their holy founder’s reference to his own body as “Brother A55”.

I bet the word “a**” sounds better in Latin. Everything is better in Latin.

For the donkey: *asinus,asini *for a jack; *asina,asinae *for a jenny.

For buttock(s): *natis,natis *(though, as in English, often plural: nates,natium).
