I was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian (USA) church. My family was never very religious (church on Christmas and Easter type of family). Now I am almost finished with my freshman year of college. After looking into the history of the early church, Catholicism is making a lot more sense. I’ve been going to mass for about 6 weeks now.

I told my mom I was interested in. it and she doesn’t seem to approve of the Church’s view/role of women and “praying to the Pope” (Catholics don’t do that, right?).

I started going to mass because my family never went to church. My mom goes to the women’s bible study at the Presbyterian church, but that’s not the same as going to church- and especially not the same as going to mass.

Any help/advice on telling my family about me wanting to convert?

If you know it’s going to cause dissesion, don’t tell them until after you’ve converted. You’re old enough to do this on your own. You don’t need their consent.

And no, Catholics don’t pray to the Pope. We do, however, pray for the Pope and for his intentions.

Thank you so much for your advice. My mom knows I’ve been going to mass. She also has an issue with the role of women in the Catholic Church. Deep down, I don’t think she cares too much even if she’s not super excited about me converting now.

May the Holy Spirit guide you,
And my He speak into the hearts and minds of your parents.

I’d recommend learning Catholic teaching on topics you think your parents may challenge you on. I think you’ve already gotten off to a great start with early Church history and you are in the right place for learning more.

When I told my wife and children I was going back to the Catholic church (after 20 years away) they knew I had examined the topics closely. That helped ease the tension.

Thank you! I’ve been reading a lot and watching Fr. Mike Schmits on youtube
