My buddy and I are working on a four part film to promote the Traditional Latin Mass. The theme is based on the show “24.” In Episode One, the hero (Dan) has been kidnapped by a group who hates the Latin Mass. The reason they took him is because they plan to blow up a Latin Rite seminary and they don’t want him to stop them (again.)

Episode 1 is done and posted:

Now we are working on scripting Episode 2. This will be when Dan is set free by the girl. Of course at the end of the first episode she was a hardened criminal, so he is going to have to say just the right things to help her conversion. Keep in mind this is also a Latin Mass promotional video, so our idea is for this scene to include all the objections people may have towards the Latin Mass. Then of course, Dan would profoundly refute these objections, and eventually convince her to let him go.

So I am asking all of you to help us. What are some common objections you have heard of the Latin Rite? How would you refute them? Also, feedback on the film would be appreciated too 😃

Okay, a group trying to blow up a Latin Mass seminary is a leetle bit extreme, but since that’s the device you’re going with, I’ll ride along with you. Most of the objections I have heard are:

–“I don’t understand Latin, so why should I go to a Mass that I won’t be able to understand.” (Yeah, they pull this one out of their ear when there are Latin-English missals)

–“Isn’t the Latin Mass just for old ladies who grew up before Vatican II?” (The person who said that needs to go to my Latin-Mass parish and see all the young families that come to it!)

–“I can’t hear most of the Mass since the priest has his back to the people.” (I love Joseph Campbell’s counter-argument: “They turned the altar around and now the Mass looks like the French Chef giving a cooking demonstration.”)
 
I would have thought this was a joke if I hadn’t seen that stupid video on Youtube. The Extraordinary Form of the Mass is not a game, nor is it something to be made fun of. It, like the Ordinary Form, is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which is a means instituted by Christ to sanctify our souls in order to one day be united with Him. It isn’t something to be vulgarized, which is exactly what your dumb little film does. The whole concept of this thing is truly bizarre. This is just another futile attempt to somehow “prove” that the EF is better than the OF. Do you really think that Pope Benedict, the one who removed the restrictions on the latin Mass, would really approve of this? Does anyone on this forum approve of it? The Sacrifice of the Mass is not a joke; why are you trying to make it one?

I’m truly sorry you are so offended about this. It was not meant to make fun of the Mass at all! Like I said, it’s a promotion of the Latin Rite. And our intent is NOT to prove that the EF is somehow better than the OF. In fact, we took pains to make sure it wouldn’t be perceived as such. The bad guys don’t like the Latin Mass because they are bad guys and for no other reason. It gives us a chance to say all kinds of positive things about the Latin Rite. Our hope is that this will be an entertaining way to clear up the many misconceptions that exist. How is that vulgarizing the Mass?
 
We did a debate on this in religion here were are pluses and minuses (that the class came up with, not all the reasons are actually legit ;))

+The truth of the mass is more visible as we all face with the priest and offer up the sacrifice together vs. “watching a show”
-Can’t understand
+Latin retains its meaning as a “dead” language
-Less involvement in the mass
+The latin is beautiful
-New mass is more similar to the house churches of biblical times
+Harder to corrupt with “illegal” ceremonials
-If you can’t read english/said language translations the mass is meaningless (but for communion)
+Retains the beautiful mystery of the Eucharists
-Hides the beauty of the eucharist
+Is timeless and the same for all ppl
-isolates us from the modern world

Chill Tim. There’s nothing wrong with promoting the Mass through entertaining means. They do it on EWTN all the time.

Besides, it has real high production values. 😉

Ha ha that was entertaining! One thing, nothing about the movie per se and I might have missed this in what you wrote, but is this going to be used for a legit advertising (like a campaign at ur church or local group) or is this just for fun online? I ask because of the shirt on the guy in red (yes, nit-picky 🙂 but if you are doing this for anything formal i don’t know if you’d need to blur out words and stuff). Its probably nothing, but thought i’d mention just in case, i’m no expert though.

Again it was really entertaining. Good luck with the rest. 🙂
 
Are you aware that the Pauline Missal of 1969, aka Novus Ordo, is the Ordinary Form of the Latin Rite, and is celebrated in most Latin Rite seminaries as a matter of course?

No I was not aware of that.

Maybe I’m missing something, but that seems sort of contradictory.
 
I would suggest you avoid giving your hero, Dan, the last name of Brown and that you avoid having him running through the churches and famous landmarks of Rome.

My point is that you are misusing the term “Latin rite” as in “Latin rite seminary.”

“Latin rite” has nothing to do with the language used for the celebration. The ordinary mass in your neighborhood parish is the “Latin rite,” unless it’s an Eastern Catholic Church.

The Latin Rite was even celebrated in Slavonic for centuries before Vatican II in certain dioceses in Croatia. Did you know that?

In other words, “Latin Rite” is not a synonym for what is properly called the Extraordinary Form.

Interesting… I’ll make a mental note not to use the term “Latin Rite” in the film. But the term “Latin Mass” should be proper to use, right?

Wrong.

The Pauline Mass (aka Novus Ordo or Ordinary Form) can be celebrated in Latin. What language do you think the typical edition is in?

And Pope Benedict does so all the time!
