I teach CCD at my parish and one of the things I try to push is prayer. Around Christmas last I was trying to figure out a way to emphasize that song (like anything else) can be prayer. I decided to create a CD of Christmas music for a hand out. Not jingle bells etc but Hymns. Then I went a little farther and selected multi-cultural hymns, Ave Maria, Come All Ye Faithful in Latin and English, Silent night in German and English, and O Holy Night in French and English. Now I need one more. My classes are predominantly Hispanic so to tie all this in, I would like to do a Hymn that is Spanish in origin, and popular both south of the border and in America in English.

Someone suggested Felis Navidad but that is not what I am looking for. I am looking for religious music not secular. I would very much appreciate any suggestions.

go on line to the company that prints your parish missallette and search their DB of Spanish language hymns, Christmas, I know the tunes but I don’t know the names. the one that comes to mind is the traditional song of the peregrinos that accompanies Las Posadas.

Well, it’s not exactly popular in the Americas, but my very favorite Spanish carol is Ríu Ríu Chíu. Its basic themes are the Nativity of Christ and the Immaculate Conception. I sang this in community chorus several years ago and it’s very fun to sing in canon format.
