The only issue with this that she wont view it as “scholarly”. I will use quotes that are from these kind of sources, but some have to come from academic journals and peer reviewed articles.
Doesn’t your university have access to scholarly online journal databases like ESBCOhost or JSTOR or atla.com/atlahome.html

Anyways, here’s the sources I just used;

Foley, Donal, O.P. Marian Apparitions, the Bible, and the Modern World. Herefordshire: Gracewing, 2002.

John Paul II, Pope. Theotokos: Woman, Mother, Disciple. Boston: Pauline Books & Media, 2000. (excellent reference on Mariology from an impeccable source 🙂 )

Lasserre, Henri. Our Lady of Lourdes. New York: D. & J. Sadlier, 1870.

Perry, Nicholas, and Loreto Echeverria. Under the Heel of Mary. London: Routledge, 1988.
(a criticism of Marian devotion and soldalities)

Simler, Joseph, S.M. William Joseph Chaminade: Founder of the Marianists. Dayton: Marianist Resources Commission, 1986.

Life and Spirit of J.B.M. Champagnat, priest and founder of the Society of the Little Brothers of Mary. New York: Catholic Publication Society, 1887.

Yeah, my library is pretty well stocked.

Oh yeah, bravo. Passing courses that may effect the rest of your life is far less important than trying to make a point. Honestly, get a grip.

Heres the thing about University, you have to do thing you don’t want to do. You have to study things you don’t want to study. The people that can do this get good marks and pass. The people that can’t get bad marks and fail.

University is a tool, it is simply a way of equipping oneself with a tool set that will further their prospects. When you go through university you play the game. When i sat my honors if my lecturers told me to change something, i changed it, because guess what THEY ARE THERE TO HELP AND ADVISE YOU.

All that is going to happen in this case is the person is going to get a bad mark if not fail. The lecturer is going to think the student is a moron/upstart for not taking or deliberately ignoring advice. The student will get a reputation as one to be avoided. Which can have major consequences if the student decides to take their studying to a higher level.

Anyway it is none of my business if the student wants to fail and get bad marks. The student asked for advice and i gave my opinion (which is clearly shared by the person that is going to be marking the thing). I didn’t realise the dude had such a chip on his shoulder about the whole thing, that he would start mouthing of at people that were only trying to help. Must be that loving christian thing, eh? 🤷
Jotobo made it quite clear from the start that his teacher is prejudiced and that he is not going to let her anti-Catholic views force him to abandon his project. Would you have changed something you wrote and believed simply because your lecturers told you to change it? If you “play the game” just to get on in life you are being false to yourself…

No, Im not “quite young”.

Get a grip? Getting a grip would be for you to be bold enough to stand up for yourself and for your beliefs and let no one ever push it aside.

No way do you let a biased, non Christian, ever tell you what you can and cant do concerning your faith. Never compromise.

I will get a good grade on this paper. I will get a good grade because rather than shrivel in the face of opposition from my instructor I chose to move forward, work harder, think longer, reach out and see out more knowledge and source material.

I feel bad that you would have tucked and chose another paper to write. Im sorry you dont see the real “big picture”.

Just because I am a student does not mean Im 19 years old fresh out of high school. I was a high school dropout 20 years ago and am finally getting sick of dead end jobs.

I pay them (the college) for their service. That is to give me lessons that strung together will give me a degree to hopefully allow me more opportunities at a better job. Their job is not to push their agendas on me. That is what her entire class has been about. If anything I should be writing letters to the dean that my English 101 teacher has to constantly teach us about lesbianism, womans rights, vegetarinism, and what ever else she seems to want to cram down our throats. Im there to learn writing skills, not an agenda.

My paper will include the required number of “scholarly” sources. It will do a damn fine job of arguing for the veneration of Mary. I will post my grade for you when its done.

I agree with Hooding Trees on this. I just put “Totally Agree:thumbsup:” and for some reason my name is above Hooding Trees post. Whatever. Doesn’t matter.

I would like to read your paper. Maybe you can post it here.

78/80 was my final grade

Some excerpts:

*If you think about what a son or daughter shares with their mother you can just about imagine the insight Mary gained. Everything Jesus went through in his life his mother was there every step of the way. When we consider what our mothers did for us we can be assured Jesus enjoyed the same from his mother. Through all of the good times filled with laughter and the hard times filled with tears, Mary was there holding Jesus close.
*

(thesis statement)

*When it comes to what Christians today think of Mary there are two camps; those that venerate her as the Mother of God and those that refuse to do so for fear of some form of idolatry. But the plain and simple truth is this: Mary was the Mother of God and because of this she enjoys a special place in the family of God and is due the veneration her position commands.
*

*So why did the apostles and early church fathers seem to have no issue with honoring and venerating Mary? Simply put, they saw her as more than just an ordinary woman and not an idol to take the place of Jesus. An essay in the Ecumenical Review tells us that “when the Crucified told the beloved disciple to take Mary for his mother, he took her to his own home. Every beloved disciple has a way of being with Mary, a depth of spiritual companionship that springs from his being an icon of the Lord”

What is also very interesting is that Martin Luther, the one who almost single handedly sparked the Reformation once said in a sermon that “the veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart”. I will even admit I was surprised to hear he said this. Martin Luther was a man that changed the path Christianity would take, even up to the present day. He clearly understood there was cause to place Mary in a special place in the church family. It’s hard to imagine the man who many know to be the “Great Reformer”, who sought to tear down years of Christian tradition once said that“[Mary is the] highest woman and the noblest gem in Christianity after Christ “ (Luther).

Thanks for the post Jotobo.

Don’t you hate it when professors think they know all of the ‘scholarly’ sources like the back of their own hand?:tsktsk:

Everyone has a lesson to learn:D

Congratulations, Jotobo, both for a well-earned grade and also for ignoring those who tried to dissuade you! 🙂

Beyond a doubt, congratulations.

As an older (graduate) student, I found times when I too HAD to make my point.
If a professor was anti-faith or totally secular, why not work to enlighten him/her?
After all, he/she is obligated to read each paper.
To ignore our Faith while studying? Impossible for me and, I guess, for you too.

Congratulations!! Did a nice job and earned an excellent grade. I would not have attempted it.

I was only trying to help. I have my degrees, i hope you are not to stubborn to get yours. I understand why you feel the way you do, it can be hard for people to accept that belief and personal opinion have no place in academia. Your are not the first person unable to grasp this, you wont be that last…

Just because I am a student does not mean Im 19 years old fresh out of high school. I was a high school dropout 20 years ago and am finally getting sick of dead end jobs.
Then do yourself a favour, and give yourself the best chance to get the qualification that will get you out of those jobs!
I pay them (the college) for their service. That is to give me lessons that strung together will give me a degree to hopefully allow me more opportunities at a better job.
Not really, you pay for use of the resources and an accredited qualification.
Their job is not to push their agendas on me. That is what her entire class has been about.
Err no, their job is to get you through the module! You have been advised what NOT to write, if you want out of the dead end jobs then LISTEN TO THE ADVICE! Do you understand the significance of being an accredited institution?
If anything I should be writing letters to the dean that my English 101 teacher has to constantly teach us about lesbianism, womans rights, vegetarinism, and what ever else she seems to want to cram down our throats. Im there to learn writing skills, not an agenda.
My friend who is an English post grad and teacher will be over in a few days. I want her to reply to this, for i were to answer this right now i would not do justice to the reply that such ludicrous comments need.
My paper will include the required number of “scholarly” sources. It will do a damn fine job of arguing for the veneration of Mary. I will post my grade for you when its done.
I hope you get a good grade. It would be sad to see such contumaciousness getting in the way of a good grade.

Congrats on the good mark, i think i have misunderstood the level at which you are studying. My bad, all the best for the future.
The “English 101” statement didnt give it away?

Go ahead be the guy who bends and folds for fear you may not get where you think you need to be. I wont. Look, she says dont write the paper because I cant find good reliable and scholarly data. Well guess what, I didnt change my topic, I worked harder to find the requirements for the paper. Because I didnt back down she respected that I was willing to defend my paper AS WELL AS work harder to satisfy the requirements.

I would have gladly taken a lesser grade. I will do ok in other classes. I will still get the jobs I want because I am hungrier than 8/10 people in competition with me.

Its funny. I came on here to find help in writing a better paper and it has been primarily clouded with your “sage like” advice. Good luck with that.

That was to be expected! Stick to your guns…🙂
