So, I have had experiences with OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. Sometimes this disorder is characterized by intrusive thoughts. For example, whatever you do, don’t think of a purple elephant! OK… What did you just think of? That’s kind of like the intrusive thoughts I sometimes experience. I am troubled by some of these thoughts because quite often they are blasphemous in nature and some of the thoughts and images that happen are thoughts of the Host being desecrated.

I understand that these thoughts are not my own and are not willed nor wanted! I have a question, any other CAF users who experience similar things and perhaps tips on how to ignore such thoughts?

Also please don’t flag or report this! I understand that OCD is a mental issue and CAF is not equipped to help (like people with scruples), I am just asking if any one has had similar experiences. I am simply seeking solidarity and asking if others have had similar experiences.

OCD and accompanying intrusive thoughts need professional help from a qualified therapist. We cannot give medical or mental health advice here. And “tips” from random people are not appropriate— you need to talk to your therapist for treatment.

I have had similar experiences. My OCD gets worse with anxiety, and the thoughts get worse from there and I feel an assault of thoughts by my own brain. I do my best not to get angry or start doing negative self-talk, I have to do my best to stay calm, take a rest or lie down, etc. I literally have to rest, and find a way to push the thoughts aside, which usually only happens when my anxiety is calmed down. I started reading more about theology, different topics of apologetics, and having meaningful music, and all of this has really helped me. Anything to keep myself busy, and calm.

That said, healthy spiritual disciplines I think are an important part of the healing and recovery from these problems, or at least to get them under control. Humility is frequently described as important in overcoming these issues. Focusing on acquiring within you a spirit of peace, is a work of courage in our day and time, one that requires wisdom and patience. I haven’t had a panic attack from my thoughts in the last 10 years. I’ve had some close calls, but I’ve learned how attain enough calm to placate them when they start to rise up. It is important to move beyond the stop-gap measures that simply “keep us going.” There is a serious work of the heart to which the gospel calls us. I heard once a few years ago:

The heart itself is but a small vessel, yet dragons are there, and there are also lions; there are poisonous beasts and all the treasures of evil. But there too is God, the angels, the life and the kingdom, the light and the apostles, the heavenly cities and the treasuries of grace—all things are there.
