The following letter to the editor appeared in my morning paper, and I would appreciate some help in writing a response:

Beyond Abortion

I am so sick and tired of hearing about abortion every time a politician opens his or her mouth.
Why are we still talking about this issue? It was voted on and passed. It has been legal for the last 30 years, and it won’t change.
I just can’t get over the fact that everyone, especially men, think they have a say in what a woman decides for herself. It is not your business.
I can’t imagine in this day and age why there would be a law that makes you have a baby.
But if that is going to be the case, I would like to make a law that would make abortion protesters have to adopt the unwanted babies that were born because abotion was overturned.
Or let’s have a law that makes a man get a vasectomy at a certain age, so we won’t have unwanted babies. If a man can preach what a woman should do with her body, then women should have the right to preach what a man should do with his body.
I wish that the people trying to overturn this law would use their energy toward other problems like finding a cure for cancer and AIDS; keeping child molesters in prison; stiffening drunken-driving laws; cracking down on oil compainies that stick it to us whenever they want; putting restrictions on bank, credit-car and insurance companies and requiring affordable health insurance.
I could go on for days. But no, let’s beat a dead horse over and over again over abortion.
What a waste of time and energy.

One of the things I would like to emphasize is how hypocritial and anti-choice this woman is.

Thanks in advance to everyone who helps!

There are so many illogical statements in that pro-abortion letter. I suggest you stick to one or two major points and logically, step-by-step debunk it. Most people reading the paper probably consider themselves “open-minded.” And if you present them with a good, logical reason for being pro-life, they are more likely to see the sense of our position and see the bitter ranting of the other person as just that. The main point is that what other topic could possibly be more important than the slaughtering of babies in their mother’s womb by the thousands in this so-called free country? Obviously it is still an important issue for millions of people in this country for it still to be the number one topic for politicians to address. Good luck!

Make a comparaison between the death toll from AIDS/cancer combined and abortion and then ask where the urgency really lies. The numbers will speak for themselves.

As for the rest of that paragraph, ther is a difference between fighting for financial stability (credit card, insurance, oil companies ect…) and fighting for life.

And do make certain to clarify the stand of pro-life as being the right for the fetus to choose life. That always steams up those pro-death people becasue you use their ‘choice argument’ against them, and it is a simple effective way to get the message accross in a few lines. It is always good to be brief and to the point in letters.

Good luck with your reply; do post it once you’re done, I’d love to read it.

And God bless…

Here’s my first draft:

I must take exception to the letter from Tracey Bowen (Beyond Abortion, Letters, Nov. 14) in which she wants the abortion debate to end. She states, “I just can’t get over the fact that everyone, especially men, think they have a say in what a woman decides for herself.”

If that’s what she believes, I just can’t get over the fact that Ms. Bowen thinks she has a say in what I, a woman, decide for myself. And I decide to continue the debate.

Ms. Bowen thinks that instead of fighting abortion, we should spend our energy trying to find cures for diseases, “cracking down on oil companies,” and “requiring affordable health insurance.” While these are all admirable causes, they are hardly as momentous as the willful slaughter of thousands upon thousands of innocents every year.

Ms. Bowen ends her letter by calling the discussion of abortion “a waste of time and energy.” One cannot help wondering why, then, she spent her time and energy discussing that very issue.

I’m not really happy with it. I feel like I’m missing something vital. Suggestions?

Kay Cee- she states in her letter “It was voted on and passed”.

That is a TOTALLY FALSE STATEMENT. Roe. v. Wade was ushered in by a move of judicial activism. Americans NEVER voted on it. If it had been presented on a ballot in 1973, it would NOT have passed. The judges used a newly “found” “right to privacy” to legalize abrtion. We want R v W overturned, IT IS BAD LAW. This will not NECESSARILY end abortion, but WILL place it back in the hands of the states. LET the voters decide! 👍

I’m bumping this back up.

I could still use some help. Please read the draft of my letter. Suggestions?

Ms. Brown states that men ought not to be able to decide what a woman does with her own body. This is nonsense. There are all sorts of laws telling people of both sexes what they can and cannot do with their bodies. The individual’s decision making rights are overruled when it is contrary to the good of the larger society. And abortion has been proven to be detrimental to the good of society on many levels.

She also states that no woman should be forced to bring an unborn child to birth. So, who forced that woman to get pregnant in the first place? Getting pregnant isn’t like catching a cold. Most women who get pregnant voluntarily had sex with a man knowing that pregnancy was a possible outcome of intercourse. Why should the unborn child pay with his or her life for a woman not wanting to face her responsibilities toward him or her?

And lastly, most women who get an abortion do so to please some man in her life, be it a husband, boyfriend, or even an employer. So much for a woman making decisions for her own body. Our society ought to be open to accepting every child born to every woman, rather than forcing women to see the fruit of their bodies as burdensome and unwanted–by the man/men in her life.

I can’t imagine in this day and age why there would be a law that makes you have a baby.
But if that is going to be the case, I would like to make a law that would make abortion protesters have to adopt the unwanted babies that were born because abotion was overturned.

UM…ya… how many thousands of people are on the waiting list for adoption?

I just can’t get over the fact that everyone, especially men, think they have a say in what a woman decides for herself. It is not your business.
I can’t imagine in this day and age why there would be a law that makes you have a baby.

You mean the state came into your bedroom and forced a man to have sex with you and then tell you that you have to keep the child??? Sounds a little fishy to me…

If a man can preach what a woman should do with her body, then women should have the right to preach what a man should do with his body.–

Nobody is telling you that you have to have sex–what you do is your right BUT if you chose to have sex then you have chosen to accept all the things that come with sex including: possible having a child, the emotional attachment to a unhealthy realtionship, the disease possibilities. Having sex comes with responsibility. For some reason people believe that you have the right to undo your decisions. YOU don’t especially when it causes another person to DIE therefore it’s not your right anymore.

UM…Is there a time line for solving injustice in the world? No…People who have a passion about the issues you listed above will contuinue to fight and bring these topics up. Why should pro-life activist be any different. The right to life of another person is just if not more important then oil compainies or banking—that is money issues not life and death…Someone has to speak for the childern if their mothers won’t.

I’ll try to give it a bit more thought, but quickly I think you can invest in making it a little longer. Try to match the number of words in the original letter. it seems a bit too brief.

I know you have lots to say, this is your chance; take a much aan advantage of it as you can!

God bless, and on behalf on the unborn; thank you for your efforts.

Second draft of letter:

I must take exception to the letter from Tracy Bowen (Beyond Abortion, Letters, Nov. 14) in which she wants the abortion debate to end. She states, “I just can’t get over the fact that everyone, especially men, think they have a say in what a woman decides for herself.”
**If that’s what she believes, I just can’t get over the fact that Ms. Bowen thinks she has a say in what I, a woman, decide for myself. And I decide to continue the debate.

Abortion, Ms. Bowen states, “was voted on and passed.” Wrong. We, the people, were never allowed to vote on whether abortion should be legal. Instead, some Supreme Court justices took it upon themselves to overstep their judicial authority and act as legislators.

**Ms. Bowen spends about eight paragraphs discussing abortion, while, at the same time, calling on those who disagree with her to be silent. While she would probably identify herself as pro-choice, I can’t help wondering why she does not respect the choice of those who elect to continue the debate. **

Better? Worse?

Comments, please!

Love it 👍

(use the phrase “innocent babies” in place of “innocents” - it’s more concrete)

It’s all printed up and ready to be mailed.

A big thank you to everybody for their help and suggestions!

I’ll try to remember to let you know if the paper decides to print it.

Thank you, Kay Cee, for taking the time and effort to refute that pro-abortion letter! Your letter is right on 👍

God bless…

And I sincerely hope the newspaper publish your letter.

May your efforts bare fruits!

I got a call today from the newspaper to verify that I had written the letter. They don’t bother to do that if they do not intend to print it.

Let’s just hope they don’t edit or alter it too much!

Again, thanks to all who helped!

Just a quick note to let you know my letter was published yesterday. I didn’t read the paper until this morning (too busy getting that turkey into the oven!)

Mine was not the only one. There were two, and the other one also took the woman to task.

A big thank you to all who helped! You guys are the greatest!

Great!

I hope a billion people read your response!

Was a pleasure to be part of this… though it was just a small part… Thank you for letting us give you a hand… but you’re the real story here Kay!

Congrats on being published by the way… 🙂

PS: what did the other letter say?

Thanks. Now if I could only get one of my novels published!

The other letter:

In response to Tracy Bowden’s of Redlands (“Beyond Abortion,” Nov. 14), we still need clear-thinking and open, critical discussion on abortion.

Genuine “It’s my body” issues rest squarely in the hands of any woman of adult age. That includes sexual behavior choices. But once another human life comes into existence, it’s no longer an “It’s my body” issue.

Abortion involves another living being, a human life, that is dependent on the mother but is not part of the mother.

Blame God or blame Darwin, but the fact is, a prgnant woman’s body is an amazing biological life-support system for a separate, developing human being.

Many women cherish this fact and carry their baby (or babies) with a self-sacrificing devotion rivaled only by what follows the birth. Others simply “endure the ordeal,” while still others despise what they regard as an intrustion. Whatever the view, the fact remains that there’s a separate, developing human life within.

I don’t agree with Bowden’s angry call for mandatory vasectomies, but fathers ought to be accountable as parents. Kids need fathers. Mothers need partners in parenting. Many of us believe that every father ought to “act like a man,” to set aside me-only interests and start living for someone besides himself.

Bowden says people who oppose abortion should raise those children. Many of us do. We redo our budgets, rearrange our schedules (or abandon them altogether), give up sleep, watch Clifford the Big Red Dog and SpongeBob, go places and do things we wouldn’t have otherwise, teach, console, encourage, discipline, play and at times stagger through life where the goal is to get through the moment, never mind the day.

Some have even put careers, or retirement plans, on hold, or permanently shelved such goals for the sake of a little human being.

Parents and parent surrogates are better people, and the world is better off, whenever we make another person’s well-being at least as important as our own. If only all parents believed that.

Anyone has a right to say no to becoming a parent. No one has the right to destroy a life to get out of being a parent.

People like me reject the scowling “It’s none of your business” rebuke as utter nonsense. Abortion is a human issue, not a woman’s issue.

Abortion is everybody’s business. So, let’s have an open and critical discussion about all the issues behind this debate, including the question too often evaded–“What about the baby?”

I really like this part.

Thanks!

You write novels?

I’ve been trying to write one for a few years now… don’t gather I;'ll finish anytime soon though… why? Go figure… 'cause I have three kids and their well being is more important than my aspirations. 😉
