A friend of mine just sent me one of those fuzzy-feel-good e-mails with a list of things to be thankful for. I can’t resist passing this one along:

FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH
WHO SINGS OFF KEY
BECAUSE IT MEANS
I CAN HEAR.

Fr. Trigilio once said on Council of Faith: “So what if the person next to you think you’re tone deaf? Let that be his penance.”

His subject document that time was Musicam Sacram.

So if the one next to you can’t carry a tune, well, take Father’s advice and let that be your penance. 🙂

There was an interesting occurrence at last night’s Mass – we had one of those very loud singers, loud enough to completely drown out the cantor. But here’s the switch – while the tonal quality of her voice was just fine, and she sang on-key, she had the worst musical timing I’ve ever heard! She was either early or late for almost every word! But God bless her, at least she was singing, and I’d rather have that, than people who just sit (or stand) there like statues, and make me feel like a soloist!

A little story: Once there was a monastery with only 3 old monks. Every day they went to the chapel to sing their praises to God. They didn’t sing very well, and felt badly that they weren’t able to praise God with beautiful singing. One day, a young traveling monk came to the monastery. The old monks invited him to stay with them. When they went to chapel to praise God, the young monk started singing in a womderful voice. The old monks were thrilled. Finally, there was beautiful praise coming from their little chapel. The young monk stayed for 3 days, and every day, the old monks rejoiced to hear the beautiful voice. Finally he went on his way. When the old monks went to chapel, they found an angel there, who told them that God had sent him to find out why there had been no praise from the chapel for 3 days.
Nuff said!

Peace,
Linda
