Hi guys.

Hopefully I’m posting this in the correct section. I think I am as this has the pope watch sticky thread.

Anyways. I’m attempting to deal with a lie circulating my local Facebook. It has an apparent “news” story about Pope Francis being involved in child trafficking

This “story” is not in any of the official news sites.

Has anyone got an official knockdown statement for this propaganda?

Ask for the source of the story. It is up to the person making the accusation to provide the evidence.

You don’t need to have a knockdown statement. If there’s no actual evidence that the Pope is involved in such a thing, you don’t need to say anything except “story ignored until substantiated by evidence”.

The Holy See Press Office recently made a statement on this.

If the people won’t listen to the official news story, there’s also Snopes, which is a website devoted to debunking rumors.

How do we know Snopes isn’t damage control central?
I better clarify this before I get in trouble. My above comment had nothing to do with this wild tale about Pope Francis.

I never heard of Snopes before this thread and have no idea who or what it is, but I don’t trust the media at all especially one that claims to be an official rumor debunker.

Thanks guys I’ve linked the website Janeway posted. Before I left for work I sent the guy ( a friend) a rather heated statement, advising him that he should, remove these lies and propaganda and erect in it’s place an apology to our Holy father.

Well we didn’t get the apology but he did take it down. So all’s good. I’ve just though about another topic as I struggled to write this. I’m calling it “Capital Offences.”

Any help would be great, thanks guys Catholic Answers are the best! 👍

anybody can write anything they wish at any time on the internet and related media. They can do it anonymously, never fearing of being caught and shown for what they truly are.

That is one problem; the other is that they have an extremely wide and extremely gullible audience. And that is likely to get worse, not better, as anonymity continues apace.

This could possibly related to the false claims of the priest Poggi of last year making a big charge that did not materialize, had to deal with homosexual trafficking accusation, it turned out to be false allegations…

it was not related to Pope Francis…That a year later, you have seen something on Facebook groups, is probably from someone making a trouble, or not very good at processing the information that they hear.

Here is an NC register article about last year’s false reports.
Prosecutors said the claims by Patrizio Poggi, who served a five-year sentence for child abuse while a priest on the outskirts of Rome, were “untrue or based on mere hearsay” and motivated by personal animosity against some of the clerics named. They accused him of attempting to coach possible victims to back up his allegations.

It’s possible to attribute the rumor - mongering from another recent report was the UN report that charged the Church for its child abuse

The holy father has been on record of repeatedly condemning human trafficking

He calls human trafficking modern slavery.

Thanks Verid. That’s been a great help to me on a personal level. Thank you.

Someone else posted the snopes link about Francis and the “Third Vatican Council”. Here’s another snopes page which directly refers to this accusation. Check the last two paragraphs:

It appears the source of the “international arrest warrant” is a blog run by one man and acknowledged by no legitimate international agency.

I came looking for the same answer. There are two no my facebook wall. The trafficking story and the story where Francis says there is no hell. I would like to reply to it.
