I don’t have a copy handy, but am looking for help with a quote from Pope Benedict XVI’s book, A New Song for the Lord: Faith in Christ and Liturgy Today.

Pages 59-60ish. Can anyone here help fill in the blanks?

It was the year 304, during the Diocletian persecution in North Africa, when Roman officials surprised a group of about fifty Christians who were attending Sunday Eucharist to take them into custody. The transcript of the interrogations has been preserved. The proconsul said to the presbyter Saturninus: “By gathering all these together here you have acted against the orders of the emperors and the caesars.” The Christian redactor adds at this point that the presbyter’s response was inspired by the Holy Spirit. He said: “Unconcerned about that (securi, ‘completely secure’), we have been celebrating what is the Lord’s.” “What the Lord is”—that is how I translate the Latin…

The proconsul insists on knowing why. The composed superb response of the priest follows, "We have done this because that which is the Lord’s cannot cease.

Emeritus, the owner of the house where the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist had taken place, answered perhaps even more impressively. In response to the question of why he had permitted the forbidden gathering in his house. He said, “First of all that those gathered were his brothers and sisters and he could not show them the door.” … Once again the proconsul was insistent. And there, in the second response, the real ground and motive come to light. “You had to forbid them entry,” the proconsul had said. “I counldn’t,” answered Emeritus: “Quoniam sine domingo non possumus–for without the mystery of the Lord, we cannot exist.”
