What is the matter of Matriomny? (Matter as in form and matter of a sacrament)

What events or people in O. T. are prefigures for Eucharist, penance, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders?

What are the effects of Matrimony?

What are the effects of Holy Orders?

What are the effects of Penance?

THANKS!!!

Why don’t you begin by reading the Cathechism of the Catholic Church. You will find the answers to your questions in there.

Thanks!

When I have time, I will do as you suggested!

Thanks!

Any quick help and answers!

From the CCC:

IV. THE EFFECTS OF THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

CCC 1638 “From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; furthermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity of their state by a special sacrament.”

The marriage bond

CCC 1639 The consent by which the spouses mutually give and receive one another is sealed by God himself. From their covenant arises “an institution, confirmed by the divine law, . . . even in the eyes of society.” The covenant between the spouses is integrated into God’s covenant with man: “Authentic married love is caught up into divine love.”

CCC 1640 Thus the marriage bond has been established by God himself in such a way that a marriage concluded and consummated between baptized persons can never be dissolved. This bond, which results from the free human act of the spouses and their consummation of the marriage, is a reality, henceforth irrevocable, and gives rise to a covenant guaranteed by God’s fidelity. The Church does not have the power to contravene this disposition of divine wisdom.

Is this homework?

Each sacrament gives sanctifying grace and actual grace. The actual grace is specific to the particular sacrament.
  1. Sacrament of Matrimony:
The matter is the consent of the man and the woman, expressed externally by words and signs.
The form is the man and woman conferring the sacrament upon each other as witnessed by the Church.
The effects are to sanctify the love of husband and wife and give them grace to bear with each other’s weaknesses and enable them to raise their children in the fear and love of God.
  2. Holy Orders effects: gives the specific grace to fulfill the diaconate (the ability to preach), presbyterate (the ability to act in the person of Christ to offer the Mass), and episcopate (strength which allows him to teach and lead his flock even to death).
  3. Penance effects: forgiveness of sin, and specific grace to overcome the sins that are confessed.
Old Testament prefigures for:
  • Baptism: saving of Noah and his family
  • Confirmation: Moses consecrated the Tabernacle wherein the tablets of the old Law were kept, and the breathing of life into Adam and Eve
  • Eucharist:
The bread and wine offered by the priest-king Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18)
The victim consumed as food for bodily nourishment as the Israelites began their journey to the promised land (Exodus 12:1–20) Passover
The manna from heaven sustained the Israelites throughout their pilgrimage in the desert, but ceased to fall when they entered the Promised Land (Exodus 16:35)
The written word of God on tablets (Exodus 25:16)
The rod of Aaron (Numbers 17:25)
  • Penance: God’s mercy (Lam 3:22-23)
  • Anointing of the Sick: Naaman’s flesh “was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (2 Kings 5:14).
  • Matrimony: Gen 2:24 “Therefore a man … cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
  • Holy Orders:
  1. Bishop: the priesthood of Aaron and his sons (Numbers 18:1)
  2. Priest: institution of seventy elders (Numbers 11:16)
  3. Deacon: the Levites

Why do I get the feeling this is a homework assignment, or something for RCIA? :hmmm:

This is not homework.

There is a book Liturgy 101, Van Slyke.

He gives a clear explanation of the sacraments.

He shows that there are four parts to a sacrament-minister, recipient, form, and matter.

Also, there are effects and that each sacrament is prefigured in the O. T.

I have read his book twice.

Some of the details I must missed, so I asked for help, that is all.

He mentions many other ideas.

I do not have time or a good computer to do the research. But mostly it is the time.
