As a former enthusiastic Southern Baptist I can tell you that General Baptists are suppposed to believe in the Holy Trinity. So are Southern Baptists. I have however met those that did not believe in the Trinity or have neve heard of it. It would not surprise me to hear of a smaller church being more or less completely unaware of this important Christian doctrine.
Let me share some of my experiences in the Baptist Church. First, most Baptists actually know very little theology. Now your larger sects like the SBC and IBF and such are better about instruction in basic doctrine but that is by no means universal.
There is a streak of proud ignorance that runs through many Baptist denominations. Now I know that sounds very harsh but believe me when I say that Iâm not saying that to be mean. I know some Baptists who would admit to it openly. Here is what I mean: many Baptists have an undercurrent of belief wherein they view too much education, or theological knowledge as an actual detriment to oneâs sprituality and biblical understanding. They think that if you try to reason out scripture then your just intellectualizing instead of letting the Holy Spirit guide you. Because of this some will actively seek to know as little formal theology as possible.
My own dear mother can be like this. She looks down theology and doctrine as âman made theoriesâ. Many Baptist really know very little more than youâre saved by believing that Jesus died for your sins (but have no idea how that actually works) and saying the âsinnerâs prayerâ. After that they know that they are saved forever and that the Bible is the sole source of revealed truth. They may even know a few choice verses to justify these beliefs.
However, many donât know the Theological reasonings behind why their ancestral founders developed doctrines like OSAS and saved by Faith Alone. Or what the Bible as the sole source of revealed truth (Sola Scriptura) even means really.
I can imagine your frustration though as your parents are holding to very wrong beliefs and theyâre asking you not to judge them yet they are in truth not even holding to the doctrines of their chosen sect.
